Definitely!
And definitely super cool!
if the information i use is accurate and updated, there are over a dozen known types for 1837.
gratz on a neat newp
edited to add. RIGHT before i closed the thread i see i read the title as "is there a ..." but you typed "is the a" - i now presume you meant "is this a ....." rendering my post moot.
so i'll just agree with GoldenEgg

Yes!
Thanks!
How do seasoned dealers still sell these as genuine (albeit damaged/holed) half dollars?!

I actually saw that one on Ebay earlier!
I already have two contemporary C/F Seated halves on the way... and I’m a college student not exactly long on money, so I passed on it.

my first guess is that we as members of the greatest coin forum in the world, underestimate just how battle-hardened we become with SOOOOO much knowledge being shared here. for the other 99% of the world, it is probably staggering just how much isn't common knowledge. my 2c
as an example, look at some of the HUGE volume ebay sellers. we can buy some stuff from them now n again but by in large, we tend to steer clear of them and/or just block them outright. i mean technically, i would buy just about anything at the just-right price, even severely damaged coins ( i have before AND made money and felt i didn't rip someone off) and be ok with them. i know there are all kinds of collectors and budgets. HOW some of them get into the very high six figures, even seven, is beyond me. how many detail holders do people need to get back when aiming for straight-grades before the lesson is learned? (nothing wrong with problem coins in details holders, so long as it is kept to a minimum and/or the submitter(s) know going in what the likely outcome is)

Ignorance, or worse……
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
Saw that one but passed on it. Glad you picked it up!
I know some people collect holed coins, some collect counterfeits, and some collect damaged coins (usually budgetary reasons). However, combine all three... well, that is a special collector - maybe trying a registry set for that category?? Cheers, RickO
Legitimate contemporary counterfeit.

I think ICG has a holder for counterfeits for educational purposes. https://www.icgcoin.com/about/the-holder/the-educational-slab-for-altered-and-counterfeit-coins/#:~:text=Customers wishing any coins in their submission that, for each coin slabbed in this new holder.
I like these 'coins' because they're educational and cool.
Thanks, logger7, for the ICG info. I wasn't aware they did this.

Yes. If it’s like the one I have, it has a lettered edge. The mint didn’t make half dollars in 1837 with a lettered edge.
That'll be fun to discover. It is on its way to me.

Oooh, I'm wondering as well... per @BillJones; does it have a lettered edge?
It's the 1837 obv2, revB, isn't it? As noted in Davignon's book.
Here's another.
Lance.
I have a few of them, fun find
