Two types of posts in these threads...
"No matter how high I bid, I never win."
"I'll never make my money back when I go to sell."
No. 1 would indicate that stuff is selling for crazy money, No. 2 makes it look like stuff goes cheap. Seems like they can't both be true...
Well, #2 could be a statement about the future market rather than the present.
Prices are generally solid. I don't think most things were cheap or expensive. They were in line with the current market. Whether anyone wants to pay that price is another matter.
I won 3 last nifgt at GC
Got blown away on 3 in S&B today
I have 5 tomorrow at S&B, I'm out of 3 of them already and the other 2 I'm going to have to bid way over current price levels to get them

One today still upcoming, but I am now the underbidder and I just do not think I want to bid any higher.
Please don't. I'm sure we are after the same lot and I'm already at my max bid.
Lol I very much doubt that it is the same lot, I do not chase old holders anymore due to the crazy runup in prices.
It was a Gold CAC Buff but I showed some restraint for a change and let it fly away.
Tim
I was watching/bidding on a proof Liberty nickel, but for what it ended at I wonder if a couple of bidders think they can upgrade it from the CAM holder to a DCAM holder. Wow!
I am chasing a few things, interestingly enough last night while watching the live auction on Buffalos for some time I saw no live bids, every lot stayed where it was at.

I purchased a number of cac Buffalos. I put in very high pre-sale bids and did not watch auction. The guides are meaningless for scarce Gem Buffalos with cac.

Both my winning bids - along with my 7 losing bids - were entered hours ahead of time. I wasn't even watching the live auction.

I’m after one coin in todays auction. I’ve made my max bid and will stick with it. It’s not a must own coin. I don’t expect to win.
That's the way I do it. I'm not going to sit there with my itchy finger on the "bid again" button. Too easy to get caught up in it. Unless it is once in 25 years coin/medal, it's just not worth it to me.

A lot of serious collectors here on the forums. If none of us are winning anything, it really begs the question:
Who is buying all this stuff at such inflated prices?
But there's really only a couple hundred active members here. There are thousands of serious collectors that are never on this forum.
Very true.
After submitting a few coins for the on site grading at the Baltimore show, struck a conversation with few other visitors who were around. They were all die hard PCGS fans and they don't even have a presence on this forum.
One of them was an elderly gentleman (whom I assumed was a member here) telling me in detail about his collection with a few gold coins in the million dollar range, and he was like "I am not on any forums".
🥺
Guess many are silently watching from the sidelines, staying in the woodwork.

Is there a buyer premium on top of this price?
If not it looks like you got over 2/3oz of Actual Gold Weight for a bit over $1000 - way under spot!
Killer deal, and the medal itself is very beautiful...
That is with the buyer's premium added in. I had actually entered a bid at melt, but no one bid me up. Only thing is: it's too pretty to melt. LOL.
I think it is because it is rather "late" in the game for agricultural/fair medals. A 19th century gold medal would have sold for many multiples of the gold value.
Edited for side note: This is the thing about auctions. You just never know. This is why it is never good to give blanket advice on dispersal of coins. The consignor of this coin got hosed. Auctions are not always the best place to sell...or buy. Some people are always like "send it to GC" or "sell it on the BST" . Sometimes, sale to a dealer or specialist dealer is a much better option.

You can have a reserve at Stack's.
It's also why it's better to have it in with a lot of other similar material. I didn't see many agricultural medals this time around.
Had my eye on some seated halves, placed a bid on one. Got blown out of the water on that one and the other prices are very strong too, with or without CAC stickers. If a coin looks nice, it's attempting to get to the moon.
I was able to pick one item up. Price was where I thought it would be.
Looking at a number of old Gold pieces a little later today. I am sure I will miss out on all of them. Old Gold with CAC is a little on the high side right now. I can wait.
I was interested in lot 2194 (AU58 CAC) since it appeared to have an unusual appearance. However, I had not seen it in hand and thus was a little hesitant. It went way out of bounds for me - $3840 (excluding juice). CAC price guide $2000. PCGS $2000.

I was at a business one day, buying tickets for an event they were going to be hosting a few days later. An acquaintance of mine from many years ago was behind the desk bidding on lots on a Heritage live auction. I recognized the website instantly. I couldn't see exact details but he was bidding on some reasonably expensive early US gold.
I had no idea he was a collector.
I had no idea he had sufficient means to be pursuing items like that.
I kept quiet, and let him do his thing. He was pretty intensely monitoring and bidding and I don't think there was much to be gained from bringing it up at that particular moment. Since then, I've learned that he came in to some significant money several years back. Kudos to him. He's a great guy.
Yes, there are a number of serious collectors (how is that defined, exactly?) here on the forums. Perhaps 1% of all "serious collectors" participate here. There are a huge number of 5-figure coins that sell pretty routinely and I don't see many of them showing up here.
I would be intensely curious to see the buyer profile data that Heritage, Stacks, or Legend has assembled. There's absolutely no reason for them to ever share it, but it would be extraordinarily informative.
I feel your pain.
1 winner for me out of 8
Funny, I won a coin that had a $850 PCGS value on it when I did my research on it a few days ago. When I just looked the PCGS value when up to $1100. Price must have gone up today or the last couple days. When I click on the price history it was $850 as of 4/1.
For those of you that would like to check this out, the coin is a 1853 Arrows & Rays half dollar in PCGS AU55
Let me know what you come up with, I'm curious
