Would a rim ding such as this prevent a draped bust cent from grading? Different photo added.

I don't own the coin, so I can't show all of it, but the question is this one rim ding, would it grade or not? Your opinions please. Now on second photo, just the rim ding...details grade?

That and the surfaces would probably garner a details grade.
Environmental Damage…
I just care about a rim ding of this type on a draped bust coin, not necessarily this one(color inconsequential). Any chance it would grade due to the age of the coin. Just curious.

In my experience, yes the rim dings affect a straight grade. Plus this coin looks ike it has a few nicks/scratches and lot of environmental damage to boot.
So nope, not going to be anything other than a slab with details grade.

Yes imo that rim bump would yield a details grade even if the coin did not have other issues. Now we also have a thread currently on the first page showing, and members happy about, showing several damaged coins with straight grades, so in the market grading world if you have the pull anything is possible.

The first image shows the field being raised from the rim ding, which generally makes it a details grade. The second image does not apparently raise the field, so it may be gradable (just considering the ding only). PCGS cuts a little slack on early/rare issues.
Thanks for the answers, I wondered about any slack cut for the older coins. It seems lately I have seen a lot of draped bust cents with rim dings, but asking graded prices. Thought I would ask.

Example of slack cut. This was previously graded by a specialist dealer known for conservative grades as F12, and PCGS apparently netted the grade to G6. Whatever, it doesn't matter to me (owner) as I collect by die state and don't worry about grades/stickers. This is rare with the single cud:
Strictly a "details" coin. More than one problem evident.

It depends a lot on the venue. Raw draped bust cents on eBay, beware, full of detail coins cracked out, counterfeits, and generally high asking prices for grade/quality. Conversely, EAC specialist dealers who advertise in Penny-Wise could be trusted more.
That depends on who you are!
This rim bump did not prevent a straight grade. Obviously a different coin and also sent to the "other" TPG:

@Nysoto Penny-Wise
Thanks for mentioning Penny-Wise, I've got a lot of reading to do.

That type of rim ding 'usually' leads to a details grade.... I say usually, because in hand, it may not look as prominent as in the pictures. Cheers, RickO
Pre 1815 coins get a lot more slack than their later counterparts. If the only problem with that Large Cent was said rim ding, I think it would straight grade. This is based on what I have seen in some expensive collections of Draped Bust and Classic Large Cents.

Can you post pics of the whole coin?

I'm no expert, but I think the rim hit is secondary to the surfaces and color on the OPs piece. I'm seeing surface corrosion and the color may indicate an old cleaning.
