Is this an example of hub doubling or something different? I have not found any other examples like this nor a listed variety.

the series is well-known to have many examples of die bounce/strike doubling whatever you want to call it. this example is certainly up there with the widest spread known examples.
if you come across examples like this, it is best to take a moment to ensure it isn't a double-struck. odds are low but its worth an extra moment. with that much spread, it would be obvious at many different points obv/rev.
This is the common O-110 die marriage. Doubled profiles are relatively common to the capped bust half series, as @LanceNewmanOCC explained above.
For some reason, 1823 has a lot of doubled profile examples throughout the various varieties for the year. Must have been a worn out screw press, which causes the dies to bounce during striking, hence the double profile. It adds a level of coolness, but no extra financial value, imho.
Cool hub doubling! Of all the Bust half years, this phenomenon seems most common on 1823.
Very cool. I have an 1825 O-109 with a doubled profile.

Great piece and eye appeal!
Nice ones all! Hopefully we'll see more.
Seems the '23's and '24's, and slightly lesser the '25's, are the most seen with this phenomena ... as @LanceNewmanOCC suggested, considered to be caused by die bounce from the screw press resulting in a strike doubling.
I have several from 1824 that show various separation, with this one being the most pronounced
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

Definitely unique and interesting. I am surprised that it only shows up on the profile and none of the other devices. That would be one I would pick up if I saw it at a show or shop. Cheers, RickO
I still kick myself for not stepping up and buying this when I had the chance.
I wouldn’t have hesitated! I would have grabbed it.
