Show Report – NWCC Spring Money Show (Minnesota)

Discloser: I am a member of the Northwest Coin Club that produced this Show. I was a first-time volunteer who can provide an “inside” perspective.
The bourse had 100 tables, and all were purchased well before the Show. This is an upper Midwest show, so a majority of dealers came from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, the Dakotas, and of course some from beyond. Specialty dealers could be found for currencies, foreign, early copper, gold, supplies, etc.
One corner was reserved for exhibits – some in competition with judging and people’s choice, and some as educational-only story boards.
Attendance surpassed two-thousand from the public (without counting dealers, staff, and club members). One dealer stated that of the 17 years he has participated in this show, this was the heaviest attending and by people coming to buy.
Registrants could enter a raffle with prizes spanning four graded Morgans and a 1/10th ounce gold coin.
Saturday was the seminar for boy scouts to earn their coin collecting merit badges. The 60 slots filled up the week before, and this program will be offered again for the Fall Show. The scouts were trained both as a group and in break-out one-on-ones. The several hour session included history, parts of a coin, counterfeit, grading, etc.
Sunday was the annual youth auction. The first 80 YNs (ages 7-14) could participate. Each was given “$200” credit for bidding on items. These items had been donated by the dealers upstairs. The 130 or so lots were lined up for advance viewing, and the YNs where guided as to how to review items and record those that they wanted to bid on. The bidding ran just over two hours, and the room emptied with smiling faces.
Regarding my personal quest, I had a good show. I came with 11 of the tougher Mercury dates to fill, and acquired three new and two upgrades. Because I’m looking for the early half dates in AU/XF, I have had a tough time finding even one such Mercury at any given coin show. I attribute this weekend’s success to learning which dealers are likely to have what I’m looking for and to go there right away.
The weekend rate on silver was about 18x face. I stopped by a gold and silver dealer, and he told me that the demand for silver exceeds supply so that he was happily paying 20x face to buy “junk” silver.
For what it’s worth, the Northwest Coin Club, while continuing its annual Spring Show, has agreed to take over the Fall Show, which for some years has been known as M.O.O.N. Going forward, that show will be branded as an NWCC show.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Great report thanks. Good to see an active bourse.
Thanks for the report and pictures. Sounds like a great show.
Glad to see such a turn out, happy that things are selling again, and the demand is up for silver. Nice to see so many youths in the YN sale they seemed to be excited to bid. Scouts also looked like they were learning something about coins and currency. Congrats to all who attended. Great pictures by the way. Thanks for the report.
Thanks for a great show report.

In a word: wow. Had to take a second look at the age of this thread. Your show committee clearly did a great job. Well done.
2,000 attendees must put this in the top 10 biggest US coin shows. Don't the big ones like FUN only get 3,000-4,000 attendees?

I was there on Saturday. Even with the large crowd, I was able to access most dealers cases easily. I was on the hunt for a nice slabbed 32 s washington and spotted one at a table early on. I thought I would look through the other dealers offerings and come back later if nothing else caught my eye. Of course, it was gone by the time I got back. I was surprised at how few of this coin were available slabbed. Lots and lots of Morgans. There was something for everyone. My hat is off to the organizing committee for putting on a first class show.
Looks like a well-run and well-attended show. Thanks for the report.
