"Small Cent" for the Box of Twenty...
resized.jpg)
I'm low key putting together a Box of Twenty and was wondering what the Forum thought about a representative for the US Small Cent. I started collecting, like most, on Lincoln Head Cents. So, I was considering either a nice MS65- RB Wheat for the Type, or one of the Key Dates: 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, or a 1955 DDO. I started collecting Lincolns, but then quickly got hooked with Indian Head Cents... so, I was considering either a nice 1890's dated MS piece, or finally get a decent 1877. Obviously, the price range is fairly wide open. If I opt to spend less and go with an MS Wheat Cent, I can spend the money on a different coin for the Box.
Thoughts and comments welcome... thanks!

1856 Flying Eagle Cent!
Why not the first small cent - a flying eagle. Or if you must go with a Wheat, and with the prices your kicking around, maybe 1909 Matte Proof (Not the VDB for financial reasons). JMHO

My pick would be 1909-S VDB. It's the one coin every kid wants
when they're collecting. Ironically, most don't buy them in later
years when they can well afford them.
I would give another vote for the Flying Eagle cent. A great coin that seems to get less attention due to IHC's and Lincoln cents. Cheers, RickO
SVDB
Well Lincolns are still my primary focus, so a nice SVDB gets my vote, but a flyer would be an excellent choice also.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
55/55 is another to consider.
Can't go wrong with a flying eagle but I'd say, go with a nice Indian Head.

Kennedys are my quest...
Tough to pick just one. You couldn't go wrong with a MS Flying Eagle cent though. Not sure what your budget is, but if you have the money buying a proof Flying Eagle would be really neat. Let us know what you decide!

I like the first branch-mint, 1908-S.

1909 S Indian head cent in a higher grade
I would choose a Flying Eagle. Just love the design and first small cent.
Hmmm... the first small cent (Flyer) is something I hadn't considered. Any 1856 is out of my league price-wise, but I could definitely consider a nice MS one...

FE for me.
Well, you like the Indian cents best, so get one of those. Not sure what you plan on spending, but consider the bang-for-the-buck you could get with an 1870-72 issue.

1877 IHC. Although I’ve always really liked 1872. Pretty neat that date is now 150 years old.
Flying Eagle cent.
And I'd narrow my search to a budget-friendlier AU grade.

I would recommend an example of the 1955 Doubled die cent. These are much scarcer than the 1909-S VDB . PCGS pop reports show over 21000 vs only 6000 ‘55 doubled die examples certified.
On the other hand, a choice AU 1914-D with good strike and minimal rub would also be an amazing choice.
Either or just make it a beauty

In your box of 20, are you going to try to keep them similar value?
Not necessarily... I'm also including some gold Type in my Box of 20 so the price difference between the $5 Liberty and a $20 Saint is substantial. I have a nice AU58 $5 Lib... it was the first piece in the Box, and purchased when gold was ~$1600, but I'm going to have to wait out gold's bullish run to realistically get a $20. I'd likely get an AU $3 beforehand if gold stays the price it is.
