This is the sellers picture. Sure looks to me that the coin was struck from a Rusted Die. Am I all wet on this?

My picture. The luster is not broken or dull.

Not a rusted die Imo -just a used die with some polishing On the bridge of the nose and behind the head

Sounds like the seller found a new term and decided to use it on ebay.

Looks like die deterioration and subsequent attempt to mitigate at the mint.

    Just a very tired die.

Not rusted. Just a heavily used die (also known as very late die state).

Pardon me ignorance but what is a jilted die? Maybe I know it as something else

I don't known that modern dies were ever stored under the conditions that would allow that much rust to develop. In any case, the mint constantly cleans up (polishes) dies so heavy rust would never have been allowed to remain.

    I don't think that's rust Ken.

That looks like a strike-through, through a very fine layer of grease or something.

Heck of an interesting piece! Would love to get a look at that up close!

There are quite a few 1925P Mercury dimes that were struck from rusted dies. I have owned 3 or 4 of them. Never have seen a S or D mint coin struck from a rusted die and have never seen a Merc that looks like this one. The reverse of this coin is just fine with no problems.

Glad to have the facts. Do they get attributed that way on the slab?

Ken, I've also seen a number of 1925 rusted die dimes over the years. Looks almost like environmental damage at first glance.
