What's the Oldest Auction Flip in Your Collection?

(Darkside Warning) I just received this really interesting 1764-G Guatemala Pillar 8 Reales. Rare as a date (est. 15-20 known), and the only example of the Charles III Guatemala Pillar I know of with chopmarks. Still sealed in an auction flip from the Stack's Dec. 3-5, 1996 Stack's sale (Lot 2162), which has caused some minor PVC damage to the obverse (and will likely be excavated from its flip soon to prevent anything further from taking place). Still, really cool to see a coin still in a sealed flip from an auction that took place pre-2000.

Got me thinking, what are some of the other flips that have stayed with their original coins?

I have a couple from The Superior Club Cal-Neva Sale from back in 1987. One of the raw lots I won in that sale was one of the very few Morgan dollars graded MS67 at the time. If I remember, common date MS67 dollars were trading around the 3K range.

I have a flip from Bowers and Ruddy's Garrett auction in 1980. The coin was a Hard Times token.

Unfortunately, I don't have either with me at the moment, or I would post a pic.

I have an old coin with a Teletrade sticker on it.... somewhere.... Got it second hand... I think they just sold coins though, not an auction. Cheers, RickO

Mine ended up being pulled from the auction due to being an altered date (from my Dark Side Collection B) ...).

Wonder how they missed that 1856 Flying Eagle cent as that has one of the easiest tells regarding the alignment of the upper part of the 5 with the lower part.

Several coins in McGlaughlin and Robinson Auction flips from the mid-80s. A New England Rare Coin Gallery flip (1883 NC 5C in MS60) from the late 1970s.

I'll bet there are a lot of NERCG flips from the 70's out there.

This coin came with the flip from a previous auction as well as older handwritten envelopes from previous owners noting the provenance.

Used to be 1982 if I recall correctly, it was a Norweb envelope of a Brand coin.

I'm BACK!!! Used to be Billet7 on the old forum.

I do not understand the lose PCGS label with a 66BN grade vs the current slab grade 65 BN?

A Superior Stamp and Coin from an October 1978 Auction. It is for a 1917 Type 1 MS 65 FH Standing Liberty Quarter. Really nice coin that I have had for a long time. Decided to send it in and it came back UNC Details - Cleaned from our hosts. Still a nice coin and I have it in my type set.

The oldest I currently have a photo of. I’m sure there are a few older in the collection.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Looking back on the auction records, that coin was graded a 66BN at one point. It was apparently cracked out and resubmitted, and was graded a 65BN, and the owner kept the old label with the coin.

Not an auction flip, but a pretty neat mail order...
