I just ran across this interesting restrike using a William Key die.

Who was Elliott Smith? Was this a numismatist or dealer token of his?

Is this die known to exist today?

When I looked up Elliot Smith, I just found this:

A little Google-Sleuthing shows one in the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museum:

Has an entry for him with some dates.

    Also:
October 8, 1920, at the New York Numismatic Club,
    Elliott Smith (1866-1944) exhibited an
extremely fine 1792 half disme. Smith was Life
    Member #1 of the ANA.

    And from here:

Now you'll have to get one of these to make a little display 8-)

    @StrikeOutXXX Great info!

The mention of the New York Numismatic Society got me to look up my 1917 Numismatic Knights of the Round Table medal and sure enough, Elliott Smith is on it! He's a Numismatic Knight!

OMG. It turns out I was the underbidder on the Grant die back in 2016!

You got to learn about a good numismatist, and a great singer!

I agree @Byers! Too bad I didn't go higher at the time! If I knew what I know now, I would have! Live and learn!

Here's the original medal from 1872:

That campaign medal is great. The Civil War has always been a topic of interest for me... I have several books on the subject. If I were to see one of those medals, I would surely try to make it mine.... Cheers, RickO

I might quibble with this label. It is not a "Dickeson Issue." It is definitely an "Elder Issue" using one older die commonly attributed to Dickeson, though even that is subject to debate.

Yes! It seems like they were friends!

I wonder if this was struck/ordered by Elder for Smith?

    What a great medal.
    I really like President Grant.
He and I shared the same birthday.
For the longest time, I thought (in error on my part) that he died on his birthday.
Funny what we believe when so young.

Don't know, but I doubt it. Elder was quite prolific in this time period.
