"Shoot him on the spot" got rendered as "shoot him on the spoot". They were hardcore back in the Civil War. Gunshot wounds to the spoot can be very painful indeed!

I'm sure that once the error was discovered (too late, obviously), the miscreant diesinker got a boot up his spoot from the boss.

For some reason, finding this variety, without problems, is a challenge. I only had one when I was dealer, and I went though a few thousand CWTs over 12 year period. I have not been able to find another one.

There's another version of that reverse die with loads of repunching on the inner legend, it is usually paired with a dateless version of the obverse. Between that blundered die and the misspelled variety, I assume that die sinker was either very inexperienced or very lubricated.
