Counterfeit Bust Dollar in Counterfeit Holder

alefzeroalefzero Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭✭✭

It is a pretty nice "fantasy" coin, but not $9500 nice.

First, it is the 1795 BB-51 style off-center bust obverse. I didn't catch that immediately. The date position set off the alarms, being a beat-skipping possible unlisted variety. But then it was the familiar fake off-center 1796.

Did the cert lookup. Yes, it says "sm date, sm letters" which would have been on the tag and is not. The pretty piece that it is, is wrong on a number of counts. The seller may not even be aware. PCGS needs to be however. Hope nobody jumps on the BIN and gets burned.

Preserving the pics here too, as it will probably get axed and it is one to watch out for.

No bids as of 10:20 PM EST. It's still up. Did anyone ask him if he knows it's a fake? Peace Roy

Also, with so much attention to detail, why is the reverse slab PCGS decal not cut correctly?

That coin is a lot higher quality that the vast majority of fake silver dollars coming out of China these days. That slab is a very poor fake. They couldn't even get the shape of the hologram correct. The fact that it's in an older OGH slab leads me to believe it's an older counterfeit that's been around for a while.

Still up.... No bids.... Sure hope it gets pulled before someone gets burned. At that price though, any buyer should be both informed and super cautious. Cheers, RickO

I have seen the "1796 Bust too far to the left" counterfeit several times. The "easy tell" is that the real thing is dated 1795, but if you don't know the series, it seems possible.

I just purchased this one last week.
