Does anyone have any coin related 3D Printed items?

I just got a 3D printer for my son. I'm thinking about making a PCGS slab holder for imaging slabbed coins to make it faster to position under the lens.
Looking around on the inter-webs, several folks have made storage boxes, display holders, and the like.

Make an extender for a PCGS box so that it closes with NGC slabs in it.

Is the resulting material clear enough for coin viewing?? If so, display cases for personal sets could be an option. Cheers, RickO
A couple of students made a music box and a coin for me last June for retiring from teaching. The reverse is blank.
On thingiverse there are several PCGS display holders and slab containers. It's a good place to search.
I designed a few items on thingiverse. These are my 2*2 holders, one of my more popular downloads.

No filament would be clear enough for viewing after it's been printed, would need to incorporate a non printed sheet of plastic. I use clear filament regularly, and it prints a pearl white color, but will let light pass through
@ndeagles ... Thanks for the reply. I have not had direct experience with 3D printing, so was curious. Cheers, RickO
I will take a stab at designing this piece as there is clearly some demand. Will post back if I can make this piece work and it maintains the same latching functionality of the pcgs box.
What is the cost of printing such a box?
On Ebay I bought some inserts for PCGS standard boxes that fit the old rattler holders, it took me a while to figure out that they were printed. Pretty slick.
Probably not worth duplication of effort, but maybe it will trigger another idea or two. (I like the ones so far).

There are a lot of factors to consider depending on your printer and print settings. With my basic settings on this box pictured the cost was 3.72 in raw materials.
This print took my printer 6 hours, printed in lower quality, you could probably cut the time by 30%.
Printer filament can vary greatly in cost too, which could cut the price by 50% or increase it by 100% or more if you are using exotic filament like color changing or metallic.
I also have an 80 flip holder double row version, which has a materials cost of $6.20
a 25 flip holder short box
With a materials cost of $2.64
A 1.5*1.5 flip holder with materials cost of $2.69.
The cost is calculated by the slicer program which sends the toolpath to the printer.
Interesting thread.
I hope more will post their coin related creations.
I too am interested in the cost to produce the 2x2 box holder.

Question needs to asked ....
Is the 3D printed material archival?
Another item I have is this bullion box that someone else designed on thingiverse, I had to modify the lid to fit the apmex holders. Most ideas can be turned into reality. I also have made custom inserts for us proof set holders for my neice and nephew one with 4 half's so they have a proof set lens with barber, walker, Franklin, Kennedy.

Thanks! That's very interesting.
Most people print with PLA (Polylitic Acid). It's technically biodegradable. The next most common is ABS plastic and PET the next most common after that. As for archival... that kind of depends on what you're looking for with that word. They can be stable for a long time. I'd tend to say PLA isn't archival in most cases and ABS/PET would be your better bets. I have not looked into any issues with outgassing, either, with any of these filament materials. I do know there's some (especially with ABS) during printing.
It's probably going to be material dependent. You've got some materials that do outgas and others that are very stable. Probably worth doing a little chemistry experiment with them.

I've done a bit of research on this and was unable to find anything about whether PLA or PETG plastics would have a negative impact on coins over time. I know that as PLA breaks down it breaks down into CO2 and water, but requires UV light and high humidity and higher temps before it breaks down.
That said I would probably not put high value coins in this until more research is done. I do have printed items in my house that are 12 years old with no breakdown, I have a gate handle I printed for my garden fence that became brittle and broke after 2 years being out in the elements. My 2x2 holders have had coins in them about 5 years now with no noticable damage, but most of the coins I have in 2x2 are low value stuff that came from lots that I just haven't gotten rid of yet or extras from mint and proof sets I have taken apart.
Very nice.

Kennedys are my quest...
A 3D printer has been on my list of tools to acquire for several years now. I've always wanted to design custom holders for coins.

Here is a prototype, still needs a little refinement but should work out well. This fits ngc, pci, and pcgs, don't have any ANACS at the moment to test with. One downside is now the pcgs holders have more vertical movement if the holder gets flipped over. Also because the pcgs slabs sit lower they are harder to pull out. Seems like you could put some foam under them out something to bring them up slightly, or another 3d printed spacer. Might be easier just to use ngc boxes, but I have quite a few empty pcgs boxes at home and a printer.
This was clear filament, so as mentioned above, you can't see through clearly. The print took 38 minutes, and used 34 cents in materials.
So when you make a box, how much in material do you use? $?
When you get it squared away, let me know…I will take a dozen!
I posted above, it really depends, but the pictured boxes were $3.72 each in materials
That's pretty cool! I'll have to look that up when I get my 3d printer back up and running.

I'm of the believe if you don't know, then ask.
Could you make plug coins for coin album fillers, say you want to fill a position in an album and you have the coin slabbed/graded, like say a 55DDO, 09SVDB, 14-D, etc....?

I just ordered a 3D adaptor close up lens that I can attach to one of my digital SLR cameras. Eventually hope to take 3D photos of my coins.
Yes, and on larger coins you could even emboss the cert number on the plug or whatever else you want it to say, I have metallic silver, metallic copper, and shiny gold colors too. Would be difficult to fit a cert number on a cent or dime plug, but should fit on a half or dollar sized one.
So, if you have an obverse image of say my 55DDO.
Then say for the reverse image you used only the Wheat ears, leave the center area open and insert cert number in place of the ONE CENT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

@ndeagles do you have that in gcode you could send me when finished 😬
The NGC adapter?
Sure thing, I need to tweak it a bit to improve the print quality and need to work on the rounded edges a little then I will get you a copy of it.
This would be challenging on such a small print to get that level of detail with the type of printer I have, but I could certainly give it a try. This might work better on an SLA printer, those use a laser to cure resin in a tub then it rises out of the resin pool. It's actually pretty cool to watch, and is better for printing small items with high detail.
Got this complete, took 6 iterations before I was happy with it. It locks into the lid then snaps into the box. I can pick up the box by the lid with 20 ASE inside and it holds. Also with half dollar rolls inside and it holds (although I wouldn't recommend actually moving these that way)
I snapped it on/off well over 100 times with no issues. I printed in different colors to see how close I could match the box colors, some are pretty close match some not so close. Could also use random colors to keep sets identified by color. The link is attached below to thingiverse for anyone who wants to download the file and print it (most libraries in bigger cities these days have printers available for the public too).
Anyone who doesn't have access to a printer and wants some can send me a message. This was a fun little project, thanks for the idea!

Here are some I purchased online for my SWH ANACS slabs, makes them fit snugly in the PCGS boxes. I read about them in a @Batman23 post and he was kind enough to direct me to them. Work great.
