Great Coin Shop Experience

Haven't been to a coin shop in a very long time, always was too busy, etc. Finally had a free Saturday a few weeks back and decided it was finally time to pull the trigger on a coin I had always wanted. Went to Colony Coin in Newton, MA and had an extremely good experience talking coins with one of the owners and looking through his inventory. The shop was everything it should be - cluttered and disorganized but had coins in every nook and cranny waiting to be discovered. Would highly recommend a visit if you are ever in that area! Oh, yeah also came home with this:

She resides in NGC plastic and is MS-63.
Something about a big gold coin just makes me smile.

    Nice pick up.
Next time you go, see if you can get some pictures of the shop itself.
    Thanks

What are you waiting for? Gold is already leaving the building and you're late to the party. I'm expecting a second opinion report coming next Saturday!

I can only wish I had access to a coin store within a few hours of me.

@Batman23 there are many coin stores within an hours drive of me, and many more if 2 hours.

Nice to hear of a pleasant experience in any local coin shop, and it looks like you acquired a very nice newp.

    Thanks for the picture.
I tried searching for a web site for it but had no luck.
It too is about 40 minutes from me, and I also never heard of it.

I would be very careful here. If someone is taking pictures in my shop and they’re not closeups of coins I would suspect them of casing the store for a future robbery.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

LOL…I would assume there’d be a brief discussion to get permission to do so beforehand, not just walking in snapping photos and sidling out.

Thanks for your concern but the info that I was seeking was posted above.
I was not asking for the store or its inventory to be cased.
I could not locate it on the net.
I did not know of this store and its existence. I live within in 30 miles of it.
Would like to pay it a visit.
    Again, I respect your concern.

It's nice to hear a good story about a local coin shop. Thanks for sharing it. I will check it out when I get a chance as they are less than 10 miles from me.

Too many coin dealers today are not very customer friendly. Many are quick to be impatient or condescending when someone is asking “stupid” questions or if it becomes apparent you are an amateur.
Curious if others have seen a similar trend?

There is always someone who wants to make you look bad.
There are a few here that excel at it.

I drew that conclusion from the aged, hand-painted sign in the Google Maps photo.

I never heard of a 1936-D Matte Proof nickel. I know there were branch mint proofs but I never heard of this one.

    Love your new $20 gold!!!

We have five nice shops in the area surrounding Seattle, all running under the name 'Bellevue Rare Coins'.

Nice friendly people, and very professional. Sort of feels like you're walking into a bank, vs the typical dusty B&M. :D

I swing by their shops occasionally, and have picked up some nice certified Standing Liberty and Barber quarters. I've sold a fair amount of 90% over the years to them. They also sell jewelry, and there is usually a line of people selling coins, and gold/silver jewelry. Very active buyers, but occasionally I find something of interest.

    Dave

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.

There are also nice shops in the area without that name.
