not touch the coins before they show up?

Back in the late 90's my grandmother was widowed and in need of money. She set up an appraisal of my grandfathers coin collection but took the silver polish to all the silver coins prior to the appraisal.

It was probably a common instruction back then, just forgotten (by either party), or misunderstood.

It’s the first thing I say to anyone who asks me any question about coins they got, and most likely I’m not going to do more than point them to a dealer who will buy them.

I would hope such an instruction would be standard. Unfortunately, so many inexperienced individuals perform the 'improvement' process prior to consulting anyone with experience. Cheers, RickO

Someone at work today asked me about some coins she got from her Grandmother- her first question was…….. “Should I clean them?”

    Yes.
No matter how many times we say, "do not clean coins", someone will. :s

For the last couple of years I just instruct people to wash their hands, not their coins.
