My new 1864 Seated Liberty half

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,627 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is one of the Civil War dates that is a bear to find halfway nice, or just to find at all. To me, this date and the 1865 were the toughest ones to find from this era. I now have 2 1864's - does that count as a major hoard? This coin here has some pretty neat obverse tonight when tilted into the light, pretty cool for a coin that grades VF-30.

I have a VF35 example of this date that I bought before I really collected the series, and I haven't seen many better ones for sale since then, aside from Unc. coins in high grade holders. I like the look of your coin a lot.

What is "compound" toning? I've never heard of this description! :)

Pretty nice for a VF30. I didn't realize it was such a difficult date. Mine is an F15 with original toning and very light corrosion.

Toning from two different sources. The first was the toning imparted from circulation, even gray/brown. The second is the ring toning that is (probably) from storage in an album.

Just a term I use to describe it :)

I wonder if it spent time in an album. The obverse looks much more toned than the reverse. Nice looking piece.
