There’s no way around it. Terrible look for all the experts in this video. Paul doesn’t seem as bad of a guy as I thought. Was expecting a real douche. He depended on the BBCE authentication like we all have. In terms of that, gotta give credit to Hart and team, they owned that mistake, and it’s a huge one. Nobody is perfect, and this fiasco only improves their methods, but does take the shine of those wraps a bit for sure. I’m super small time, and have only opened and have some BBCE FASC 89 upper deck. Couple a crap boxes, and 2 I haven’t opened.
Sadly, I’m thinking about the ones I haven’t and wondering if the case they came from was legit. That said, having Steve Hart in the chain WAY better than not.
My confidence in Steve and BBCE is based on 25 years of dealing with them as the most reputable and reliable dealer in the hobby. As a vintage unopened collector, this episode wont change that one bit. If anyone is looking to unload any BBCE boxes at wholesale prices, PM me, please!

Not sure why people would feel bad for Logan Paul, he got his money back and generated a ton of publicity and profits to you his YouTube channel.
Steve definitely screwed up and has to own that. I think he should stop authenticating sealed cases altogether. FASC can still be done (but we are all going to have to take that with a grain of salt for anything high profile) but he has to open them going forward IMO.
Steve is an honest guy and took that like a champ. But I agree, would have been best to stay out of that video. I think Logan Paul was mugging for the camera because he knew he was getting reimbursed. He had nothing to lose and Steve had everything to lose.
the one aspect i'm having an impossible time wrapping my head around is at the 1:38 mark when the previous owner relayed his concern due to the fact that the previous nutsack owner changed his story 3 or 4 times. gee, what could that possibly portend? i would've needed an extra large bottle of ointment for the acute tingling sensation that my spidey-sense would've created had i heard that, yet by all accounts everyone involved in this debacle just dismissed that little nugget as if it were minutiae.

How was he ambushed?
They didn't barge into his business with cameras rolling. It was known Paul was going there to meet with BBCE. Steve obviously agreed to go to the hotel room knowing they were going to be opening the case.
For the folks saying that Steve shouldn't have been there, I think that would have been an awful look. He should have 100% been there as someone that stands by his business. I think it would have hurt him (and BBCE) so much more if he wasn't there.
Not to trivialize the error, but, the way Steve has treated me since I got back into the hobby in ‘09, this is like watching a buddy take multiple gut punches, and it all makes me feel sorta sick.
Not piling on as I'm a Steve fan BUT does that 1.78 million $ 1986 Fleer basketball case need to be opened now? If I owned it I'd be a little queasy now and if I ever wanted to sell it. The chain of custody is much different then the Pokémon case but still the element of doubt no matter how small exists.

I brought that case up in the last thread and I agree it should just be opened and authenticated FASC. As you mentioned though, provenance is pretty solid as it came from the Fritsch vault.

after hearing just how little "authentication" goes into these wrapped cases, there is now an element of doubt in every "sealed" case. as the video shows, resealers have no problem "aging" what steve thinks are original tape/seals/labels. I think moving forward, it would be silly to "authenticate" a sealed case without opening and actually authenticating it.

100% agree with this. Can only imagine how Steve felt when the guy says "Theres going to be a whole other process that goes into this. I would never have purchased this $%&* if wasn't BBCE wrapped." Without re-hashing the closed thread, I hope Steve took prudent steps to protect his business and the literal price he pays. The figurative price is a ding on his reputation, which is otherwise stellar. I would still buy from him.
It sounds like the guy who sold Logan the case can sue Steve for his "potential investment lost" even if he could get his money back from the previous owners??? This thing happens in America, any type of lawsuit is possible!

I wonder how much that party who pocketed $2.7MM paid for the case. Was he the one who paid $75k from ebay?
Didn’t the Fleer Basketball case come from Fritsch? If so the provenance makes that one good.
I don’t understand the allure of an unopened case - but I would rather have 19 wrapped boxes - and the contents of one randomly selected opened box with the box opened on video and vetted from experts of the set that know the sequence.
If you don't use BBCE , Who are you going to use? Did the hobby stop using PSA after the PWCC scandal . If this were a movie, the last scene would be all the so called sellers in a room laughing at the scam they pulled on the insurance company and BBCE. " We did it, We did it." Then the very last scene of a small shop owner holding a sales slip for 100 boxes of GI JOE cards for Logan Paul. Hummmm.... only in the Movies.
No one. The only way I would buy an unopened case would be to agree with the seller to open it in front of him and crack open one box. If it was bogus, the seller agrees to a full refund. Any seller who's confident in the authenticity of his case wouldn't have a problem with that deal.
I think the advise for BBCE not to authenticate Pokemon is sound. They should avoid authenticating anything in the future that they aren't experts in unless they first do a ton of research and examine similar product with known provenance so they have exemplars to compare to.
The scale of this blows my mind. For a forum that just resurrected a ten year old thread about a guy planting an 88-89 fleer Jordan in a pack he opened, this is something from another realm.
I think very highly of Steve and BBCE as a whole. Great customer service and fast reliable service. I also like that Steve worked with us on group breaks for this forum, often giving discounts.

Ok. But one here as far as I have read has said anything about him being anything less than honest! No hint malice on his part has ever been even alluded. The potential issue is perception of competence in the brand.
Of course PSA literally got it wrong on the first card they ever graded and they are doing OK. As long as Steve continues to do what he's always done and stays away from items outside his expertise then I'm sure sometime in the next 12-18 months this will fully in the rear-view mirror.

This is probably why the original thread got shut down. People came on making ridiculous claims such as that BBCE was liable for the entire $3.5 mil. "bro you don't understand how the real world works"
And guess what happened. The $3.5 mil got refunded and then the rest of the chain of custody is locked in long drawn out legal battles over stupid overpriced crap. BBCE will be just fine. Either stick to sports or bring some of those MTG and Pokemon blog nerds over as consultants, and make bank on all the submissions. I wouldn't want to leave that $$$ market to somebody else.

Sorry, but they screwed up on this one and will continue to take heat. And I'm not going anywhere.
I own only a few BBCE items in 1990 Fleer basketball FASC boxes and nothing more. You want to talk about a Pandora's box if someone should open a high end BBCE authenticated box/case and it is found to be tampered with. From a quality control standpoint, we know BBCE is not 100% accurate, but what is an acceptable rate? I don't think we will ever know.
