Several years ago I added this Barber quarter to my photo cert collection. It was polished pretty good and stark white and shiny. I put the thing in one of those old yellow Kraft coin envelopes in a sunny window hoping it would mellow out a bit. Well I forgot about it and hear it is 4 years later. I think I will just leave it in there, Hopefully after 10 years it won't look so cartoonish.

Need a Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate. If you have one for sale please PM me. Current Ebay auctions

That’s pretty amazing it toned to that degree. That must be really an out-of-the-way window for you to forget about it ….. was there substantial humidity in the mix, too?

It's in my daughters old bedroom. She moved out 5 years ago. It was in a window behind a house plant on a shelf.

I forgot about an Isabella quarter on a window sill for a few years. No envelope, just the coin. Not a pretty sight like yours.

In ten more years, if left in the same environment... it will likely be terminal black.... Cheers, RickO

Flash back to 1986. Time to dip it again so it looks like the photo cert!

Dipping a coin with really dark toning frequently leaves a dull lifeless surface since the dark toning has already eaten into the surface. Leave it alone and sell it if you don't like it.

I would love to replace it, but finding another Barber quarter with an ANACS photo cert for my unique type set is difficult. I've been looking for a Barber half for 16 years. I bid on one, but a shady auctioneer sold it to the underbidder.

I've read in a few places that Taco Bell napkins also work for toning coins. It's the sulfur in the paper that causes it to tone but it takes a lot of patience to wait for it to happen since it's a very slow process. It helps to put it in a warm and humid location.
