Predictions for the Coin Market: 2022

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,222 ✭✭✭✭✭

I love speculation, based on some personal evidence.
Your thoughts as to the hobby for the year?

Mine is simple:
Shows will open up, especially once we get past January (and a Covid pill is widely introduced, and the ill effects of Christmas and New Year subsided).
Cash will be valued less and less (you simply can't print trillions and expect the value of each dollar to remain), and thus, hard assets, such as coins, to be worth more than today.
There will be some extraordinary prices for "Beverly Hills type Coins," yet the everyday type coins in problem-free condition will do well.
We will still sometimes bicker and argue a bit here on the forums, yet there will be an overall positiveness that will explode as we continue to work ourselves out of this virus.
Coins will be fun (again!).

I know it can be stated predicting the coin market future is horoscopes for people who think they're too bright for horoscopes, but it is fun, and let's revisit this thread in a year.

I think things will continue to get more expensive and it will lift even the lower end of the market. But I increasingly feel like we are in the midst of a bubble. My purchasing has already slowed down a lot and will probably get even slower.

If I am correct then I will be well positioned for getting things during the burst. If it keeps going up then I’ll just enjoy what I have and not worry about it. Maybe finish up a few low end albums.

Coin market will follow asset prices in general. Absolutely.

Fed / gov't is wedded to rising asset prices. Can't they do this forever?

I'm not the first to say this but The next market/asset downturn will be the worst of our lifetime. Likely.

Hopefully not 2022 or soon but.....just keep listening for the music. We're all hard of hearing, anyway.

In 2021, felt that a lot of experience bitcoin players moved their profits on to precious metals, art, numismatics etc.
If there is reguations imposed and major fluctuations happen, that may perhaps drive market prices either way.
Just my two cents as always. :)

Mint Errors continue to be strong, with more record prices, especially on proof errors and better mint state errors!

For the coins I collect it seems sky is the limit. Price moved up auction after auctions. eBay only has details coin available with high price. It will be another high price year. I can’t find any reasonable price coin to buy.

Here is the speculator's slogan: "There is no highest price, only higher".

Speculator said it is the fight between "New Money" and "old Money". "Old money" believe history will repeat itself. "New money" think it is a new era. Who is right?

    I remember the internet era / bubble of 1999 / 2000

The old money was wrong for a very long time before they were right.

After they were right, wait a few years, and they became completely wrong again >:)

I predict that the spot prices on ALL precious metals will change. 🤔

Most of us will add coins to our collections no matter what the market does in general. Some of us will sell coins making or losing money.

Oh hell, it will be another “regular” year in numismatics. I’m glad I’m along for the ride.

    Enjoy your collection!

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

The bubble continues to fatten .... more crazy auctions (ie. 2Gs for a 1884 CC GSA ungraded) and over indulgence will persist well into 2022 ...
of course, like most bubbles, it will end badly when the music stops... so don’t be the sucker without a chair when it happens!!

The price of everything of necessity will continue to rise. Even after the UnFederal Reserve raises rates.

Early type in EF40 and better, especially when (mostly) original and with solid eye appeal with continue to advance as supplies are limited and holdings are in strong hands.

Registry competition will cause a heat up in top 2 and a half grade prices for most 20th Century Classics

Peace Dollars in more common grades will settle down (other than EF and lower, top grades)

Gold and Silver will advance from here

Here on the board we will see an influx on newb's, so we can expect more parking lot finds, amazing (not-so-much) errors, and lots of questions (and maybe even some decent ones!)

We will also see some of the same petty BS (unfortunately), and at least one or two noticeable members will get banned for talking s*** and breaking the rules

And finally, the amount of CAC threads will be about the same ... with the standard bi***ng and moaning from those who oppose of them

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

I predict some coins will go up in price, some coins will go down in price, and some coins will go sideways in price.

Remember, coin collecting is a HOBBY. Have FUN!!!

BTW, just as an FYI, by the numbers I track, on 12/31/20 Gold was $1,898; on 12/31/21 it was ~$1,830, a decline of ~ 3.6%. On 12/31/20 Silver was $26.36; on 12/31/21 it was $23.30, a decline of ~ 11.6%. These declines occurred in an inflationary bubble of a year... so you just never know what will happen.

  • jmlanzafjmlanzaf Posts: 35,289 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think the bubble bursts, along with several others, when the FED ends stimulus to fight inflation.

Caveat: If the FED chooses to not fight inflation, nominal prices may continue to rise even as real prices are flat or dropping.

Nah, that was in the cookie!

Like Skyman said... some coins will go up, some down, others sideways... but this is just a hobby for me. My livelihood isn't attached to the coin market.

edited to add: That said, I'm seeing strong prices for the coins I've been watching over the past two months.

I predict everything I collected and held dearly all these years will go to various sales auction houses this year and will bring me 40% what I paid less fees for the my precious beautiful beautiful round disks.

I try not to make public predictions. Being wrong so many times in past years, brought the realization that I was basically stating what I hoped would happen, rather than informed, reasoned information. So, I will state, that the economic situation we currently see, will, at some future point, experience a violent upheaval, and I have no idea what may result from such an occurrence. I do feel it will be major and of considerable duration. There, I did it again.... :o Cheers, RickO
