Can a PCGS coin fail to upgrade on a resubmission SOLELY based on…..

The number of times it’s already been sent in?

Has anyone heard of such a thing?

I have never heard of that circumstance.... However, I am not sure we would know if that were the case. Cheers, RickO

How would anyone know how many times it has been sent in? Are you referring to specifically grade review/reconsideration? Or are you talking about cracking a coin out and resubmitting it? Or are you talking about submitting a coin for regrade?

Either way, I am not certain it matters. I would think that if I sent in a coin in an MS64 slab say 8 times for regrade/reconsideration/grade review, etc, and all 8 times it stays as an MS64, then I should stop sending it in, because it has consistently been graded MS64 8 times, plus the time it was sent in to begin with.

I could see sending a coin back in maybe a time or two if you feel strongly it should be graded higher, but anything more than that seems like a waste of time and money.

While this thread might not end up being a very short one, it probably should be. That’s because the first reply answered the question - if a coin failed to upgrade solely based on the number of times it had been resubmitted, there wouldn’t be a verifiable record of that fact.

People like to try and "win". There have been coins, even pop 1 coins that have been submitted a dozen times until they final got even just a plus grade much less a full point.

I’m actually talking about a specific coin that I own.
I crossed it from NGC and have sent it in a number of times where it’s been upgraded twice numerically and last time with a plus.
The coin could be very well be maxed out, or……as my question is asking, failed to upgrade simply because it’s been sent in for regrade in the holder too many times.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I remember seeing a coin in CoinFacts with different Cert numbers over 20 times. This was before CoinFacts purged the majority of its photos. It wasn’t uncommon to see the same coin listed a double digit number of times. Some with higher grades and some with no change.

With a successful crossover, AND then two subsequent upgrades and now a plus, I think you have already “won” and should rest on your laurels….

Was this sent in for re-grade or raw?

It was sent in multiple times in its holder for regrade after it crossed.

From what we used to see and what people have said, the answer is no.

Some people have indicated it can take 30 or more submissions to upgrade.

Oh come on Dave, they keep track. You KNOW they do!!

The difference between you and most people is with most people the graders are told, "Some smoe sent this one back for a regrade. Give it a quick pass and see if we missed something."

In your case, they stick a special sticky note on it, and send the coin around saying ... "Dr. Dave REALLY thinks this is an upgrade candidate, and you need to start the process all over in earnest again with how many points you think we missed it by."

    :naughty:

How else can we explain what some of us know?
