Crossover question

Okay, suppose I'm requesting a crossover. Example: Current coin grade is 65, but I'm willing to accept a crossover grade of 64+ ( but not a 64). Is it possible to set a minimum grade that includes a +? Thanks!!

Yes.

I have a question about crossover as well- in the above scenario let’s say you don’t get a 64+ and the coin gets returned to you in the original holder. How long should you wait to resubmit to try again? Do they track how many times a coin is submitted?
I’ve got a coin in an NGC PR66 holder I would like to cross, obviously I would prefer it to cross as a 66, but I would be okay with a 65. It’s a rare coin and would still be finest known. Should I submit for a 66, if declined resubmit it for a 65+, and if declined resubmit for a 65, or just get it all over with in one shot with a minimum grade of 65 and hope they give it a 66 or 65+? I’m a little paranoid that if all I ask for is a 65 then that’s all I’ll get.
Paranoia or reality?

It probably depends on how much you prefer the coin in PCGS vs NGC plastic. If PCGS would never cross at 65+ or 66 without first seeing the coin raw, then all of those crossover attempts are just a waist of time and money.
If they will easily cross it at 65 based on what they can see in NGC holder then once it’s cracked you may also get the + or even a 66. If they give you a 65 at first, then you can try one or more regrade in holder attempts to move up to 65+ or 66.
I played this game several years ago when trying to cross or upgrade existing PCGS grades.
It really can take several submits to get the grade you think the coin should be.
It really only makes economic sense to try the repeated attempts if the value between the 65 or higher grades is multiple times that value of any expenses to get there.
I was not dealing with any finest known or already at the top pop for the date and type.
Mine were mostly Pl or DMPL Morgan’s where there were large changes in price one grade up, mainly measure in several hundreds to several thousands of dollars in value.

I should add it might help to know if the coin is currently CAC or would it even CAC. That might make it an easier decision to accept the 65 grade if that is also the only grade it will CAC at.
That sounds like good advice thank you! I’m shooting for PCGS plastic so I think I’ll request a 65 and hope they like what they see when they crack it out!
I sometimes wonder how much money has been wasted on crossover attempts...
Is there a statistic somewhere that shows how many cross-overs have been attempted and how many have succeeded?
In the last 30 days, 4009 attempts have been made, and 2145 were successful. About 53%.

I’m not a crackout guy I just have a half dozen or so coins in NGC plastic I would prefer to have in PCGS plastic- with TrueViews- NGC photography is not good. So I guess I’ll give it a shot at the FUN show- fingers crossed (and coins too hopefully)!
Since I do not sell coins, I do not play the crackout/resubmit game.... So I save a lot of money.... Of course, I do not make any money on coins either....

I only sell when I need money to buy something I want more- I’m just your garden variety degenerate coin collector as David McCarthy is fond of saying.
The TPG's do not keep track of individual coins that are submitted for crossing. There is no record that your NGC, ANACS, etc. coin has been seen before. They keep big picture statistics only.
How long should you wait to try again? Whenever it suits you. Many folks neglect to consider the volume of coins that cross the desks of graders. And some collectors think their coins are memorable and graders will be reluctant to change their minds. Nonsense.
Since crossing requires some guessing on the part of graders (looking through plastic and unable to see the entire coin) it is usually a conservative call. A raw (cracked) coin would likely get a fairer shake. But cracking has risks. Suppose it bodybags? So many of us choose to cross at any grade just to get it into PCGS plastic. And if we feel the coin deserves better we resubmit/regrade it. It will be reassessed raw. Yeah, double grading fees suck but that's the game.
Does the CAC sticker persuade graders? PCGS says it doesn't. Who knows.

Thank you very much- great information!
NGC photography is spot on. This coin looks exactly like it does in hand.

That is a beautiful photo! My NGC slabs have been in plastic for 10+ years- looks like they’re doing better these days!
I intensely dislike the white prongs, so if it were me, I’d cross at the minimum acceptable grade level.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
I have given the idea of crossing over some modern NGC graded coins to try to improve a registry set but then realize that I can buy the PCGS coin in the desired grade for less.
