Thoughts on this 1939 DDR Jefferson Nickel cherrypick

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 7,928 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently cherrypicked this 1939 DDR nickel, and got around to photographing it... it spent a few days in acetone and it looked a little better. Unfortunately, the green flecks weren't affected by the acetone and a couple of light scratches are visible now that I've had the time to get it under good light. I suspect a details grade is in its future... what do you think?

Acetone won’t touch verdigris if that’s what it is

The scratches do not look out of line for a coin with that much circulation

Nice pick, but do you really want to spend money slabbing it? Probably XF 45 at this point if it straight grades

    nice pick

soaking in mineral oil for a couple weeks might loosen those green spots, although if etched into coin could show pits when done.

Cool yup going to need some work green rose thorn or a toothpick with some oil finish with some acetone.

I'm the Texas show rep for ANACS and get an employee discount which would make it worth having graded, problem-free or not 😀.

IMO: I would not submit it.
    Not worth the cost.

Nice find. I think it is fine as-is (and saleable as such).
But if it was submitted, I think it would grade 45.

Nice find, good luck with the verdigris. Didn't mean to hijack thread. My bad.

Super nice cherry pick - on these DDR's I imaginea PCGS/NGC grading will eat most of the price of the nickel.

Nice find. I would not get it graded because I think that you can get nearly as much by selling it raw and you would not make up the grading fee. Great find. I have one, but I never cherry-picked one or found one in coin roll searching.
What you could do is check how much they are selling for on eBay both raw and slabbed and figure out if it is worth slabbing. Error Coins valued at less than $100 are not worth slabbing IMHO.

Go ahead and get it graded with your discount. The slab will make it saleable should you liquidate. Cheers, RickO

    Thanks!

Like I said earlier in this post, I'm the Texas rep for ANACS and as such, I get an employee discount on grading. It enables me to get a lot of things certified that wouldn't be worth it if I had to pay full price for the grading.

Cool grade of a coin I listed for in the early 90s. Now they are all but forgotten much like my humble example in my last remaining SEGS holder

    Good eye in Cherry picking.
That sure is one popular ddr.
    Unfortunately for those two scratches.
