Why did New Orleans change the mint mark in 1880?

Is there a story to be told? Is it writen in the history books? Surely this was done for a reason.

What do you mean? I collect New Orleans golds and I am not tracking a change. They re opened after “closing” in the civil war in 1879 and maybe the fonts varied a bit but no more than any other mint during the period.

Mintmark punches break and wear out and then need to be replaced.

New Orleans had nothing to do with the mintmark.
The mintmark for branch mint coins at the time were all applied at the main mint in Philadelphia, the dies were then shipped to the branch mints.

I recall the 1880-O Morgan has a very small, round mint mark.

You mean smaller/rounder than the other years? Because an 'o' mintmark is by definition going to be very small and round...

Mintmarks changed all the time. Some Liberty Seated issues have small and large mintmarks even in the same year.
@Ds6960.... Welcome aboard. Are you referring to the 'micro o'? It would help if you explained a bit more. Cheers, RickO
