Why dealers drink

PTVETTERPTVETTER Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just got a call that he had a rare error
he had a 1922 peace dollar with mis spelled trust with a V in it.
I tried to tell him that the old time U was a V and gave him and example using the W as and example.
told him to look at as 2 V V and is called a double U
he hung up!

You should have told him it is a rare and collectible coin that is at near an all time high due to the price of silver. Those are worth at least 20x face value and up now days

Some shops may get 20 or more of these calls a day and they will be nursing their emotional pains with a bottle and cups....

I get quite a few. Yesterday it was a circulated 1936 US Cent and a 2 Separate Presidential Coins. The best part is when they ask "how come it is listed for so much on Etsy then?" [insert head slap here]

My favorite is the folks with a 23 Peace that swear it’s a 28 ... they come in the coin store with hubris but leave with humility ...

  • Che_GrapesChe_Grapes Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭✭✭

And being a coin dealer is not a reason to drink it’s a reason to drink more often

I would hate telling an old guy that his modern mint and proof sets that he thinks are valuable are more trouble than they are worth.

Just 91-95. Edit, I have no plans to sell them.

I couldn’t even find one on the dang US mint website today. Or gold coins.
They are pretty much sold out of everything except proof sets.
I never really put much thought into buying a brand new mint set until it dawned on me today. Oh well maybe next year.

Being an early riser I check everything most everyday. The uncirculated mint set came and went, quickly. While the 2-coin reverse proof set is up a lot, ase burnished also and sometimes the one ounce uncirculated gold The dang uncirculated set just doesn’t and quality is 🤔Right now the Morgan/Peace dollars are not being offered. 😉

Before I retired (yeah, right) from my career position, I was known as a coin collector. Often employees would bring me coins they thought were valuable. Mostly an old Morgan or Peace dollar.... sometimes they had purchased coins from the TV show :'( . Most of the time, they were not significant. Once in a while a relatively good one would show up. Always tough to break the bad news. I had a couple of the TRVST inquiries.... A few parking lot quarters... One old St. Gaudens $20 that was nice. Not as many events as a coin dealer, but interesting from time to time. Cheers, RickO

the easy answer to this question, which is asked often, is to agree with the caller about the error --- but to explain that they are all made like that.

I had a couple of the TRUVT inquiries

you probably mean TRVST, right?? :p

@keets.... :D Thanks Al, I did not even notice I had done that.... Cheers, RickO

Coins shouldn't drink. Or maybe only if they are at least 21 years old. Great Gravy! State Quarters are old enough to drink?!?
They may become 'intoxicated state' quarters.

Went to an early morning AA meeting this am, a second step twelve step twelve traditions meeting, I recommend open meetings for seekers whatever your experience is. One core idea is to focus on your own strength and life and not let others to sidetrack you with extraneous issues. No one has a right to steal your serenity.
