The winning bid was a new bidder with 13 seconds to go. That was a manual nuclear snipe with basically no time left. You can' t react to that within 13 seconds on GC. Congrats to everyone involved!

Interesting. You can’t react with 13 seconds left? I refreshed my page at 8 and 3 seconds left, with screen shots.
If you’re not able to submit a bid with that much time left, it seems like an opportunity for enhancement.

I not only refreshed with under 10 seconds, but ALSO successfully purchased a lot from GC in the past under 10 seconds!
GC needs no enhancement. Bidding with less than 10 seconds is not an issue.

Good to know. 13 seconds sounds like a long time for computers!

But you need to put in a bid with more money to go because if your bid is outbid you will not have time for another bid. This happened to me before.
Why it's the "Best" is lost on me - I saw it at FUN and can think of many others errors I'd rather own. I guess it's mainly the popularity of Morgans that drove the price and interest along with the hype.

Until you end up having to wait for a confirmation page to load. I just placed a bid on a coin a minute ago to see how long it took to go from clicking the "place bid" button to seeing my bid on the page, and it was 8 seconds. Less than 13, but you wouldn't have a chance to bid again if there was already another bid higher than yours. You'd also have to correctly type in your next bid.
A "bid next increment" button would shave some time off and make the UI nicer. Extending the auction by 30 seconds when there's a bid within 30 seconds of ending would totally solve the problem.

Which I why I asserted the winning bid with 13 seconds left was a nuclear bid.
That seems like a speculation. Perhaps a good one, but do you have any evidence?
If time has simply run out as you said and no one else could bid with the time left, it seems like the winning bid could have easily been a conventional bid as well.

None, but someone doesn't come out of the blue at the last second and put $160K on the line just to make someone else pay a little more for something.
Sometimes they do, but to win, not to make someone else pay extra as you say. Sometimes, it's just the limit of what someone wants to pay. I've won quite a few things at the top increment of my willingness to pay.
In this case, pre-auction estimates were running from $100k to $150k, so I can see $160k as a legitimate bid.
What other ones would you rather own? If you post them, there can be a discussion.
I would, but they've already been posted!
I foolishly passed on a gold IHC several years ago at $50k and didn't buy the WA/Sac error early on as I thought they might be confiscated (it wasn't clear early on). I'd rather have either one of them.

Congrats to Ian @ianrussell, the winner, the consigner, Amon Carter and Virgil Brand!
Hopefully the winner will make their name known so he or she can be added to the illustrious provenance list!

Here is the other Sac $1 mule:

Sold for $160,312.5 cash.
I'm glad I upped my estimate!
I wonder if that's cash or BitCash
That's a cool coin too!

I did it too and faced the same scenario where it froze at 13 seconds.
