NEWP & GTG! 1806 Draped Bust Quarter *GRADE POSTED*

KliaoKliao Posts: 5,610 ✭✭✭✭✭
edited November 22, 2021 9:54AM in U.S. Coin Forum

Went to my local coin show today came home with this. Nice dark grey overall look.

I believe this to be a 1806 B-3 R-1. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Let me know what you guys think of the coin and what grade it got.

The scratches on the top right of the coin are on the holder and not the coin. Including the one just above her eye to the star.

Interesting strike. One side is bold while the other side is almost non-existent. I will toss out a G4 guess.

    G6

Congratulations! That's a fairly nice looking, wholesome coin. I'm with Batman ... looks in the G4 area

fun to collect coins in this grade range. for sure like that hue (gunmetal grey).

that "scratch" across the shoulder could possibly be from the detached lamination? @ k9. the line seems to umm line up.

i'll go with 6 for the missing rims, rim dings and flan defect. nice pics and presentation!

Thanks all for the compliments. My first draped bust type coin and I'm very excited.

Will probably let it run till tonight or tomorrow and reveal it then.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that is a result of the lamination. If you look at the first picture, to the left of the "scratch", some of the detail of the lamination can barely be seen.

I think AG3-G4 is fair. The obverse lamination is interesting and fairly large. These draped bust quarters are a lot of fun! I believe it’s a Browning 4 variety but I don’t have the book handy.

G4 easy. Maybe G6. Depends how they were feeling that day!

The lamination is interesting but in hand, it just looks like a dark spot as it's very shallow. Would need a loupe and a closer look to determine it's a lamination.

I took a closer look at all the die pairings in coinfacts and varietyplus and I am pretty certain it is the B-3 die pair. B-3 and B-4 appear to have the same reverse die but a difference I noticed on the obverse is that star 1 is pointing to different locations of liberty's hair. B-3 is pointing to the top lock while B-4 is pointing to the bottom lock. I don't have the book so I can't say for sure but that is my observation. :)

One of them (B3 or b4) has the funky die damage at the shield above the left eagles claw but I can’t remember which one…and there may also be a remarriage in there also.

I bought it yesterday in the NGC holder and it’ll stay in there for the time being. Not looking to spend a whole bunch on crossing my coins to PCGS. :)

LOL! Ever since NGC attacked PCGS for grade inflation they have been boning their customers by trying to change the grading standards back to the old Brown + Dunn line drawings IMHO! They have made me a lot of money by under grading coins. Never thought I would be a crack out guy, but they make it impossible not to be. Heck I even sell them sometimes in their holder for the next grade up and to very satisfied customers!

Edit to add...this is mainly on circ stuff....they are still lax IMHO from mid AU and up.

Gradeflation, IMHO was the 1st real advance in coin prices I witnessed. I remember selling Buffalo Nickels with 2 grades...old and new school. Kindda hard to take it back since it has been around awhile.

Posting on TOP of the quoted text, as you always do. The reason it's considered bad form is because it disrupts the flow of reading a thread by making the reader skip over your response to get context and then come back up to read your response. Not trying to be a d**k, but just genuinely wondered if anyone else found it annoying.

    Sorry to derail the thread...

  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

LOL! I'm the opposite and would rather folks post it on the top. I don't need to plow through the dribble I've already read. Of course it might be wise for those who like to post out of context who haven't read the entire thread! :p

PS Maybe others just go with the default...I would rather see the new before the old. Perhaps that's why @HeatherBoyd won't address the bug I pointed out...to punish me and make me scroll through all the old posts to get to the new! :#

While browsing Heritage's sold archives of 1806 G4 quarters, I actually found my exact coin sold there just over 2 years ago. I some how recognized it browsing though.
