My Dad told me, "Nothing good happens after midnight...... Go to bed and wake up to see tomorrow."

while i understand the old church saying, it’s not true in the least.

My Dad never went to church. He was an atheist. He was also one of the few survivors on an aircraft carrier that was sunk in the Pacific in WWII. I asked him if he prayed while he was floating around waiting to be rescued. He said, "Hell yes."

i always heard preachers daughters were the freakiest growing up. and they were right!

while i understand the old church saying, it’s not true in the least. i could break out new years celebrations, but my go to recant is a ton of good, no great, things happened after midnight. especially in college. theyd happen after midnight. then again at 12:25. again at 1:15. and then again another time or two in the morning before she did what is lovingly referred to as “the walk of shame”.

the real moral of the story is to make sure you dont do anything stupid after midnight to jeopardize your chances of making it to bed safely to truly enjoy all the really free inhibitions that occur after midnight.

    Go ugly early?

another thing i dont understand is why professional athletes are not home and in bed during the season. good, solid sleep is so important for the body to perform at peak level. why would they want to stay out late and not get that extra sleep?

party hard during the off season, reign it in during the season

Dennis Rodman and Ric Flair are both outraged by this statement!

But I agree, I just don't get it...What small fortune I have accumulated is not getting risked for BS like this. No excuse for this guy.

Pro Athletes have such a short window to make the big money. why on earth would they not put everything they have into making sure both their minds and bodies are working at peak level. Sleep is such a huge part of it. If they are lucky, these guys may have 50 years to live it up after they retire. (well, not Tom Brady. at this pace he will be lucky to have a decade after he retires at 65!)

here they were a few hours before the crash -- an innocent night out at top golf. i've done this myself many times, so it's kinda surreal watching this & knowing what was to come. Ruggs certainly wasn't double the legal limit here, so obviously the drinking ramped up after this vid was shot.

as a golf aficionado, i find watching him hit balls to be interesting. clearly, he's a novice. his swing leaves a lot to be desired. but i can tell that he takes it seriously based on the amount of time he's spending on each shot (as well as the fact that his girlfriend said he had been up there hitting forever). it's a sport he was interested in.

a very innocuous activity that turned terribly wrong afterward. a real shame that the night couldn't have ended there

The biggest problem is is the “It will never happen to me” thought process, kids don’t think of risks and the results of taking stupid chances or making bad decisions.

Make no mistake about it, Ruggs is a KID

These guys don’t have dollar one and instantly get a six figure payday, mix that into being 22 years old with alcohol and being irresponsible and anything can happen.

I read that he refused a field sobriety test but blood was taken from him at the hospital so that in itself will give irrefutable evidence on the amount of alcohol in his system, I also read that he attempted to save her. That will be the only thing that is in his favor if true.

I doubt he gets the maximum sentence but he will do time and never play in the NFL again.

    Tragic story for all involved

I am usually pretty lockstep with your opinions Perk, but I will respectfully disagree with you here.

Ruggs is a grown man. legally, 18, but once you hit your 20's, you are a grown man. Personal irresponsibility does not change that.

He signed that big contract and instantly had grown man responsibilities. not just for himself, but his entire organization.

I think calling him anything else than what he is gives him another excuse. He made the decision to do what he did. It was not a horrible accident, it was negligent. his decision to be negligent.

I hope he spends the maximum penalty in prison and I hope he gets sued to the stone age in civil court by the victims family. I hope he has nothing left after this. the victim sure doesnt.

Doing 156 in a residential area driving a corvette and slamming into the back of an SUV, killing a 23 year old, = stupidity of the ultimate degree, which should and I suspect will result in him forever being out of the NFL, and incarcerated for a very, very long time. His blood test, (which he refused at the scene) and taken shortly thereafter at the hospital resulted in a twice over the limit number.

I once owned a new '73 corvette and "tuned it up" a bit. Had a Holley 780 carb which had jets that you could change out. Hooker headers and an Edlebrock manifold. Well, one day, (one of those dumb days you do dumb stuff), I changed the jets and of course had to "test it out". Well there I was on I-85 south of Atlanta, clear day, no traffic near me and I hit it. I got it up to a tad over 140, the white passing lines where just flying by as I used them to stay straight. I thought to myself that if I blew a tire they'd be blotting me up. I got off the gas quickly and figured those jets would be ok.

This is what happens when you're in a fiberglass car and get hit by a truck. Scary moment for me!!

Craig I certainly respect your opinion, and see your point of view. I also cannot argue with your mindset because your not wrong.

I just look back at myself at 22 and I wasn’t what you would consider a responsible adult at all. I shamefully admit I drove drunk for over 30 years and thank my lucky stars I never hurt anyone. I will not ever drive drunk again, there is too many risks involved and no excuses to be in that situation.

Truck driver told me he swerved left at the last second, otherwise it would have been full on into the left wheel. You can see he missed the wheel, but still stung me pretty good. I still have the piece you see in the bottom middle of the pic, it has the corvette emblem. Had the car repaired, can't believe it wasn't totaled. It was never the same again, sloppy work, alignment, etc. Sad day, but lucky I made it. I vividly recall standing in the rain listening to the anti-freeze pour onto the ground and hissing. I really loved that car!!!

Part of the job.......oh, forget it......just drive slow and be sober......this incident is bringing back a lot of painfull memories....... So Sad.........SLOW DOWN!...... SPEED KILLS!

He was texting Derek Carr and Hunter Renfroe that same evening asking them for golf tips.

Derek Carr has shared some heartfelt emotions with regard to Ruggs, wondering if he could have done more to prevent this tragedy. He also said:

    Derek Carr said:
“He needs people to love him right now. He’s probably feeling a certain type of way about himself right now and he needs to be loved. If no one else will do it, I’ll do it.”

I appreciate where Carr is coming from. Ruggs deserves to rot in prison for what he's done but he's also a human being and I understand what Carr is saying.

I've mentioned on here before that I coached a kid in football who later went on to drive drunk in college and ended up killing a van full of University of Wyoming cross country team members. I loved Clint when he played for me and that didn't stop when he committed that crime. He deserved to be punished and he was. He wasn't much younger than Ruggs is now. Maybe, like Clint, Ruggs can somehow try to atone and make up for it in the years going forward.

I witnessed a very similar accident. It was so terrible but here it is.......I was driving West on Interstate 40 in New Mexico. Early morning. A van passed me. Speeding. Truck drivers notice things like this........two women were in the front......they weren't watching the road.....talking......when the van passed me the rear window was painted, LADY UTES!... girls high school basketball team I think. The girls waved at me.....so happy.....and pretty. They must of pulled off at a rest stop because later on, West of Tumcumcari, there was black smoke covering the road and I pulled over with another trucker and we waved traffic to stop. It was a fire started by a railroad crew. So.....here comes the girls van. I stepped out on the road with a red flag to stop them. The driver and her friend were talking and went right by me into the black smoke. They all died. Worst traffic fatality accident in New Mexico history......I can never get it out of my mind. SLOW DOWN! PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD.! OH, MY....those girls. Slow down!

Total different culture there..... especially Wyoming, Montana. 80 mph speed limit and the belief that 9 your fine and 10 your mine: meaning 9 over the speed limit is fine. Was working in Rock Springs, Wy and asked one of the guys how long it would take to get to Pinedale for a scenic Sunday drive. Reply----- "about a six pack, give or take". Yes, scary.

they opened up the speed limit in central/northern maine a few years ago from 65 to 75. and you are correct, everyone here is zooming at 85 +. in the north woods, 90 is fairly common. It is especially scary here as most interstate is surrounded on both sides with woods. there are so many deer/moose that come into the roads and get plastered. It is difficult to survive hitting a moose at 85. for both the person and the moose.

This is a story of my brother in law's accident from January. He has driven a semi or farm equipment his whole life. Has been in counseling and has not driven since the accident.

A woman is dead after losing control of her vehicle and colliding with an oncoming semi.

The crash occurred at 9:30 a.m., Monday, in Whiteside County near Rock Falls, Illinois.

According to a news release from the Whiteside County Sheriff's Office, a semi driven by Ricky J. Chapman, 61, Fenton, Ill., was traveling westbound on Prophet Road, just west of Luther Road, when a female driving a car in opposite direction lost control going around a curve and slid into the path of the semi.

When deputies arrived they discovered both vehicles were fully engulfed in fire.

The Whiteside County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene and pronounced the female dead. A positive identification of the female driver is pending.

I recently took a road trip from Georgia to the middle of New Hampshire...a little over 1,250 miles each way.
Speed limit was 70 in most areas and a bit slower in metropolitan places. I was driving 80, sometimes + just to keep up and was being passed by easily 90+ drivers. Can't tell you how many idiots were just cruising in the passing lane, which caused daisy chains of cars until they finally looked in their rear view mirror.
I-78 and I-287 through NJ and NY were especially dicey. I-81 paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkway was perhaps the most mellow and scenic. Glad to be home!!

  • VikingDudeVikingDude Posts: 1,342 ✭✭✭

I think the speed limit in the area is 45. So going 78 in a 45 is beyond ridiculous, but 2x that beyond comprehension.

  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,250 ✭✭✭✭

Sounds like he was trying to pull IVs out and stuff. Hospital staff had to get a signed court order from a judge at 4 in the morning to draw blood. This may sound crazy; but what bothers me way more than the drinking is the speed in a residential area?? I've heard of men and women drunk all the time and that is simply awful. Driving at 156 MPH through a residential area is beyond comprehension and what separates this incident from basically anything I've ever heard. The judge even said that he has never been involved with any case involving this type of speed. If he's not sentenced to the maximum time, then what are the range of penalties for. This is the most extreme neglect I think any of us have ever heard. So sad for the woman, her dog and the family.
