Las Vegas Raiders second-year wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was charged with a DUI resulting in death after being involved in a serious car accident in Las Vegas early Tuesday, according to law enforcement.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released a statement confirming that Ruggs, 22, was driving the Chevrolet Corvette that was involved in a crash near the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard and South Spring Valley Parkway just before 3:40 a.m.

Sad news, I don't understand why people don't just call a cab when they're drunk rather than put other people at risk.

If I'm not mistaken, the NFL/NFLPA actually has a phone number these guys can call to get rides for free for this exact reason.

Absolutely inexcusable not to get a ride.

The Raiders and Vegas were a bad combination from the start. Now it's turned deadly. I'm not surprised.

Also......the visiting teams to Vegas have protocalls in place to prohibit and to monitor their players activities in Las Vegas before the game. What a mess!

Yes, all of these guys can get that ride. And it's not going to be a random Uber.

anyone who kills someone while dui should face vehicular manslaughter charges and NEVER drive again. not one strike, two strike etc. NEVER.

    drunk driving is that serious.

My wife & I were talking about that yesterday too. Depends on who you ask - sometimes the answer is 12:00, sometimes 1:00, But for sure 3:40 is just asking for trouble.

anyone see the vid? i did. very difficult to watch

imagine putting your finger on your stove and holding it there for a few seconds when it's on full blast. exactly, you can only imagine it because you sure as hell wouldnt try it, and even if you did your natural instincts wouldnt allow it to stay there for longer than a microsecond.

now imagine being trapped inside a car with no place to go and your entire body going up in flames. on any horrific-ways-to-die hierarchy, that way of exiting has to be near the top.

if Ruggs escapes real jail time because of who he is and how much money he has in his bank account, then our judicial system needs to be set on fire as well

    Leonard Little:

After leaving a birthday party in 1998, Little crashed into and killed Susan Gutweiler in St. Louis, Missouri who was on her way to pick up her son from a concert. When tested, his blood alcohol content was 0.19 percent, 0.11 points exceeding the legal limit of 0.08 in the state of Missouri. Little received four years probation and was ordered to undergo a thousand hours of community service.

On January 18, 2003, with charges dating back to 1999, Little was charged with communicating threats and making harassing calls, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department. Little's attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said that the charges were filed after Little and his former girlfriend Michelle ended their relationship. Rosenblum added, "We don't think this case is going anywhere. It was groundless from the beginning".

On April 24, 2004, he was arrested again for driving while intoxicated after being stopped by The Ladue Police Department for driving 78 miles per hour in a 55 mile-per-hour zone on Interstate 64. At the time, he had red eyes, smelled of alcohol, and failed three roadside sobriety tests. He later admitted that he drank alcohol to the police. After being convicted of misdemeanor speeding but acquitted of DWI, Little received two years of probation on May 6, 2005, and was prohibited from drinking any sort of alcoholic beverage during his time of probation.

Twenty five years ago a drunk driver slammed into the driver's side of my truck. Just inches behind the seat. I was temporarily knocked out and dazed. When I came to, there was smoke in the cabin. You don't know what panic is until something like that happens. I started pounding on the window to break it so I could get out. No go. Then I figured it out.........just open the door the regular way. That worked.

Words of caution......When I was young I was a truck driver. Logging truck in California and Oregon. One evening there was a family station wagon along side the road and the engine had just started to catch fire. I stopped to help out. All big rigs are required to have a fire extinguisher on board. Before I got to the car, it exploded in an orange fireball........Here's the deal......our family business is a Fire Protection Co. Residential, commercial, restaurant kitchen systems, sprinkler systems, and of course fire HYDRANT installation and repair....everything. I can tell you from experience....... DON'T TRY TO BE A HERO unless a person's life is at stake and you have to do whatever it takes. Fires are unpredictable...... anything can and will happen. Just get away from it. And....if you are in a car accident, get far away from any of the vehicles involved. Don't think about it just do it. It's very common for a fuel line to rupture in an accident. Then the interior of the vehicle fills with fuel vapor, its a bomb waiting to explode. The heat from the engine is the igniter. Just get away.... far away.

supposedly a loaded gun was also found in the vette. and if it wasnt tragic enough, i have heard “her dog too”. only way this turns out sideways for him is if she was dwi as well. even then he’s still f’d and shes gone. zero winner game.

I'm sure this will drag on for quite some time but here's a bit of info:

"The judge set Ruggs’ next court appearance for Nov. 10.
Probation is not an option in Nevada for a conviction on a charge of DUI causing death, which carries a possible sentence of two to 20 years in state prison. "

while i understand the old church saying, it’s not true in the least. i could break out new years celebrations, but my go to recant is a ton of good, no great, things happened after midnight. especially in college. theyd happen after midnight. then again at 12:25. again at 1:15. and then again another time or two in the morning before she did what is lovingly referred to as “the walk of shame”.

the real moral of the story is to make sure you dont do anything stupid after midnight to jeopardize your chances of making it to bed safely to truly enjoy all the really free inhibitions that occur after midnight.

another thing i dont understand is why professional athletes are not home and in bed during the season. good, solid sleep is so important for the body to perform at peak level. why would they want to stay out late and not get that extra sleep?

My Dad never went to church. He was an atheist. He was also one of the few survivors on an aircraft carrier that was sunk in the Pacific in WWII. I asked him if he prayed while he was floating around waiting to be rescued. He said, "Hell yes."
