Are Spitting Eagles a Common Error?

So I found this 1993 D Quarter and it looks a lot like the 1983 P spitting eagle, my question is, is this a common type of die crack for quarters? Has anyone seen a die crack like this on this quarter before? Thanks in advance.

Common pre-covid and the mask mandates...lol.

It's not a die crack, it's remnants from a clashed die, so it can occur on any eagle reverse. Even though it was hyped as something special, it's just a regular clashed die variety. Still worthy of a 2x2 IMO.

It is not uncommon... but worthy of retaining....Cheers, RickO

  • Thanks for the clarification hoopster, I'm going to hold on to it, its the best example of this type of error I've found so far.

Did not know that it was a die clash that created this.
Thanks to one and all for the info.

Spitting Eagles of the 1891-CC Morgan dollar variety, are so common they are a joke among seasoned VAM collectors.

    When in doubt, don't.

And they are not technically errors, as the feature is in the die and not the strike.

Die clashes are not technically errors?

Die clashes are not technically errors?

Nope. They are different die states, regardless of what eBay sellers call them.

So cuds are not errors, brockage is an error, die clash is not errors, off center is an error, wrong planchette is an error, but wrong dies on the right planchette is not an error 😜

Wrong dies for the planchet would constitute an error. Cuds, die breaks, die clashes, ... are just die states.

Either a spitting eagle or someone left the faucet on.
