I have taken it to be a derogatory term for the Classic Head $2.50 and $5.00 gold coins that Andrew Jackson and the Democrats, led by Senator Thomas Hart Benton, introduced in August of 1834.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. I thought it was candy... common term in the candy world. First time I have seen a coin/token/medal whatever with the term on it... Cheers, RickO
“Mint Drops" refers to the hard money of the Jackson and Van Burren. In 1837 and again in 1857, financial crises caused loss of confidence in paper money and widespread redemption of currency in coin.
