I do not have an example but good luck!
The 1942/1 dime is one of my favorite overdates of the 20th century along with the 1909/8 double eagle. They're scarce but not rare and they are easy enough to find on eBay and at the larger coin shows. There are counterfeits made of this coin so I suggest that you buy a slabbed example or buy a raw one from a trusted dealer.

Definitely be wary of authenticity on these.... as stated above, widely counterfeited. Neat error and one of the few I may actually acquire...Cheers, RickO
My grandfather got one in change in the 50s while buying a cup of coffee. I own it today, and it holds a special place in my heart.
I always think of the joy it mustve brought when he saw it in the palm of his hand.

I would only buy this coin in a PCGS / NGC slab.

Here’s Mrs_Spud’s one, but she doesn’t want to sell it. I really like it a lot🌜

Why not SEGS, ANACS, etc?
This thread brings back memories. The 1942/1 Merc was a must have for me. In 1996, I looked through about a half tube of these at my LCS. I selected the one below. I paid $280. for it. Four days after I bought it, I submitted the coin to PCGS. It is not for sale. Good luck in your search.

IMO: They don't stack up to the PCGS or NGC standards.

What about their reliability for purposes of authentication?
Mark Feld* of Heritage Auctions*Unless otherwise noted, my posts here represent my personal opinions.
When it comes to authenticating a coin as to what it is or is not, I would say that they can tell a real coin from a fake.
When I buy a coin, I want the best set of eyes to tell me what the coin is and its grade. I get both from PCGS and NGC. I will pay for the best service available. I am not a seller or dealer.
My collection is about 99% PCGS.

Kennedys are my quest...
If it weren't for my Whitman album having a hole for this silly coin, I wouldn't even have it on my radar. Now I'm trying to decide if I do buy one, if I will crack it out and complete my album. In that scenario, I will care very much about authenticity, and not so much about super accurate grading.
Why not leave it in the holder?

Yes, bringing back memories here too.

Some cool examples.
I bought mine raw from a trusted dealer. Later sent it in to our hosts and wasn’t disappointed.

That is the question... I would really like to complete the album 🙂
I'm trying to figure out how much it is worth to me to do that...
Take a picture of the coin, shrink it down until it just covers the coin's diameter and glue it onto a cardboard disc of the same size..
Do the same for the reverse.

Kennedys are my quest...
Yeah, yeah... Just not quite the same is it?
Perhaps I have a touch of ocpd...
Yes, you are right. It is just not the same.
Let us know what you decide.

Unless I find one and decide to buy it, the question remains academic...
