KENNEDY SETS SHAKE UPS

The Kennedy Registry sets now have " 7 Specialty Sets" requiring the 1964 SMS coin with the older sets no longer requiring this coin.
Pros and cons appreciated.

You guys have always said that there’s no 64 sms? Did I miss something? ( by you guys I mean all the wonderful people who contribute). Thanks 🤔

Not everyone has said that. What people have said is they don't exist in the wild. The recognized coins have a fairly clear provenance

Cool JM. Thanks and I’ll reset. So some where there are some. Ok

Some people don't believe in them at all. But not everyone

Yes, Virginia (@Jzyskowski1), there is a Santa Claus and there are 1964 SMS Kennedys.
There is a current GC auction offering this coin. At the last time I looked, the first bid offering is at $90,000.
It ends in like 15 days.

There appears to be a total pop of 6 1964 SMS

No average set builder wants to see incredibly rare coins like any denomination 1964 SMS coins, 1958 DDO cents, etc. included in any registery. I say bring them on. I may not own them, but I will have other coins that are difficult to obtain and maybe even in higher grades than other collectors to remain competitive. Others will simply not care in the least. I personally say that if you list one SMS coin, you need to list them all.

Glad I don't collect them. There is no comparison between the official 1965-67 coins and the miracle 64. Specialty sets, fine. They have no place in a basic set.

I agree that they should not be in a basic set.

Is the 1964 SMS now required in the basic set? It's been over a decade since I had a top three Kennedy registry and it was 100% without the 64 SMS.

I remember Heritage selling one in 2019 for $108,000. But if that one at GC is already at $90,000 then the Heritage Half was a "Deal". And I don't know about 6 pieces as I thought the range of 64 SMS "sets" made were estimated to be up to 20 - who knows for sure?

I am certain I do not have one of these in my Kennedy half collection... I have picked up a lot of '64 mint sets over the years.... What a find that would be, to have one hiding in my collection. :D Oh well, as they say... 'The stuff dreams are made of...'... Cheers, RickO

There are now 6 additional new specialty sets created that will require the 1964 SMS.
All the other sets will no longer require it. If prior sets did require it, it has been removed from them.

These new specialty sets are now a second set of an original.
The only difference between these sets is that one now needs the additional coin.

They are running parallel to the 2014 Proof set which in one set requires the 2014 W Gold Kennedy and the other set does not.

    The new Kennedy sets:

    Just a note:
NGC also has graded 1964 SMS coins that could be crossed.
The last time I tried to trace the known samples that have been graded, I came up with approximately 30 coins.
    PCGS currently lists 16.
    NGC has 9.

So if you have one of the 6 (or 20), you now have your own bathtub to play (compete) in. And if you do have one, you don't get to torpedo the rest of the set competitors.

Maybe I'm missing something, but that sounds fair to me.

That is assuming some already haven't been...

Anyone recall years ago the lone MS68 1964 Kennedy in the POP reports? It was later determined not to be a regular business strike yet rather the lofty SMS and the coin removed.
They are such a pretty coin in detail and strike.
