Ebay "expensive item" BIN - message I haven't seen before - have you??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,426 ✭✭✭✭✭

Also noted today that when clicking on an item, it's coming up in a new window. When did that start??

Yes. They have been doing this for over a year. On auctions, it's blown me out of a few snipes. You basically can't snipe anymore on expensive items unless you have already placed a bid at or above the "expensive" threshold that triggers these validation messages. On BINs it's not so bad, but it just kills snipes!!!

The new window after clicking is kinda new. They did it a while back, then stopped. I don't like it, but I'll get used to it...

never seen it, how expensive are we talking about?

  • bigjpstbigjpst Posts: 3,143 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yep. I’ve seen it a couple times. I don’t buy much on eBay so my “expensive” bar is pretty low that has triggered it.

I have had this come up even with sellers that I have had multiple successful transactions with and lost a number of snipes as a result.

OK - thanks. Haven't shopped bullion for a while on ebay so it was new to me - this item was $1100 or so.

It is probably to make sure someone doesn't steal your credit card info and then buy a bunch of expensive stuff.

Same experience. They text you a six digit code which you then type in and then you proceed with your transaction. Just another layer of security.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact number since they don't give any indication. I have had it happen on both bullion and numismatic items.

So, as a seller I’d be PO’d (and sellers never are favored on eBay), because they have prevented the auction from selling to the highest bidder by interfering with snipes.

Hmmmm, Perhaps it's for folks with newer accounts? I just bought a $10,000+ set of coins last week with none of this!

You just perfectly described my experiences around same time last year. Had it happen a couple of times on high ticket items and also lost out on a few snipes as a result. Came out of nowhere and disappeared quickly too.
Guess they have been having a lot of info stealing and other hacker issues that make thhem put in such practices. Anyways, I rarely use eBay anymore except for an item that I cannot find anywhere else. :)

This is not a good idea for auctions. Obviously cuts out the top bids which almost always occur at the end.

No, I've had this happen a handful of times as well- Over 40,000 feedback and been on there since '07. No rhyme or reason either, I've had it triggered on an item in the high hundreds and not on other purchases in the thousands.

I just bought a 2k coin today and a 7.5k not that long ago and I have never seen it. I assure all my limit would be lower than @Lakesammman

    :D

What if you bid, pass the security check point, then snipe later on - are you cleared to do so by the earlier security check??

I'm not high volume but have been on ebay for 20 years or so.

This was the case a while back, but I can't vouch for it now as it has been a while...
