1836 Reeded Edge Half Dollar

EddiEddi Posts: 509 ✭✭✭✭✭

Another very early purchase, from the mid 8o's to be exact, ex Stacks. I do not actively collect Bust halves but this is one I wanted attracted in part by the the low mintage of 1200 coins. Lately, however, I think this figure has been revised to approximately 5000 coins struck.
It is still raw as most of my collection. It has a small rim tap at the bottom of the reverse; visible, but still quite small.
I would greatly appreciate your comments and opinions, and what I might expect if I go ahead and have it encapsulated.

Thank you.

I would think that would grade VF-25 if you were to get it certified. In this case certification would be worth the money.

Looks like a coin worth slabbing... and while my first thought was 30, I will defer to @BillJones grading skills. Cheers, RickO

Yes, VF30 was my first impression, too, but I wouldn't quibble with VF25. Nice looking color and surfaces.

I think VF as well and I love the subtle toning. Thanks for sharing...

Great looking coin, I don't see any serious problems or distractions. It's also got a little bit of that CircCam going on, which many people like. I would also guess VF25,

I agree it is a VF, and definitely worth getting it graded.

    1979 ANACS grading VF-30/25, so modern VF-25.

Yup, the ANA split grading of 40 years ago is what I thought of, too.

I know why that stuck with you but it's the first thing that I thought also.

Sometimes (but rarely) a coin does actually appear to be slightly more worn on one side. Even back then though the rule was that a coin's grade was determined by the lesser grade side. Full rims on the obverse but not full of the reverse always meant that the coin didn't have full rims.
