Long Beach Show - quick report of day 1

I played hooky from work and went to the Long Beach show today. It’s a short drive from where I live. Road construction closed off the usual parking lots, so ended up parking in a shopping center parking garage.
The show wasn’t in the usual hall, had to go all the way behind the Convention center to Hall C.
The hall was smaller than the usual one.
I focused on trying to find 3 coins for my circulated type set. One was a Barber half in AU58. I expected to find dozens of those and planned on picking whichever one had the best eye appeal. But I didn’t find a single AU58 Barber Half in the entire show
The next of the 3 coins was a Draped Bust large cent with a grade anywhere from 20 - 45, but with good eye appeal. I found about 5, but either outside my budget or with discoloration or spots . So I didn’t get that one either
The 3rd one I was looking for was a Classic Head Large Cent in the grade range of 20-40 but with good eye appeal and with no porosity like so many of these have. I found a couple that fit my criteria but they were outside my budget, but in the very last row I found one that met my criteria and it was actually less than the bottom of my budget. So I happily bought that one. I’ll take a better picture later, but here’s a quickie showing it in its scuffed up old green label holder
I also scored some cool free swag at the PCGS booth
I’m playing hooky again tomorrow and taking Mrs_Spud with me to look for a few Roosevelt dimes for her registry set. I saw several that met her criteria which is MS67FB. I’m also going to submit about 5 coins for grading. I have vouchers for 8 coins and was going to submit 8, but I went through all my raw coins and I don’t have 8 that are worth submitting. I was going to try a few long shots but decided not to waste the vouchers. They don’t expire til next July so I’ll just have to find some coins worth submitting between now and then.

Nice pickup, and in a great holder too. And it’s the toughest of the three you are seeking.
Cool report. I stopped by at the beginning of the show just to submit coins. I had business to attend to after lunch so couldn't really browse. The line at PCGS was borderline insane! Took at least 90 minutes to drop off six coins!! I had stupidly figured that swinging by the show would be less hassle than mailing them in.
FYI, the usual parking garage is indeed open despite the construction.
Thanks for the report and that is a nice cent......Too bad you could not find the others on your list. Cheers, RickO
You're smart buying that Classic in an OGH. You know the coin is stable. Based on a scary experience I had years ago, an expensive pre 1815 copper started developing PVC spots in holder 8 years after I bought it (coin did not have this going on when I bought it). As a result, I will not buy a pre 1815 copper unless it's in an OGH.

Thanks for your report.
nice classic head large cent there in ogh no less. love me some chocolate!
FYI - I just wanted to mention that the person I bought the large cent from is Pierre Fricke. I noticed in Crusty’s Long Beach report he talked about Pierre Fricke’s Confederate notes and that @Walkerguy21D mentioned that he is one of the few dealers not charging moon money for large cents. I agree, he gave me a great price on the large cent I bought. I went back today for a bit and went back to his booth to check out his Confederate notes, they were amazing! Definitely a dealer that I’d like to do more business with.

Looks like a nice 1813 cent... congrats!

Is this the same guy who used to have bins of various large cents for $15 and $25 at his table at Long Beach?

I think he did have a couple of bins of raw large cents in his booth.

Nice report.
Sounds like you're having fun! Good pick ups. Love the old school PCGS holder and coin you bought. Having those "free" vouchers are great features. Use them wisely, like I see you have. It's also nice to have the mrs. Involved as well. Thanks

Have attended the Long Beach shows since their inception 1964 as a young teenager.
maybe missed several dozen out of the the aprox.. 171 shows (57 years) put on..
For me this was a very poor show as they have gone in the past. walked the complete floor 5 times in three days.
desperate bought 4 AU- Unc peace dollars from a choose them lot. few Discounted silver Maple leafs
at end of show. No coins I collect, Nada! on the floor. very unusual. A number of dealers I use (half a dozen)
were not there.
Security questioned my early bird badge 4 times. I suspect renta- venue workers not trained. Dealers took off their masks
after the mask police came by "put on your mask please"
will I go in February? maybe. But doing better online.
Nice pick up spud great show report. ...thanks
