Show Report, Sheboygan WI Show

For those not familiar with Sheboygan WI (or nearby Kohler WI) consider watching the 2021 PGA Ryder Cup this week. If you turn on the Golf Channel you will learn all you need to know about this very small community. If you have never heard of Kohler WI, I suggest checking out the many toilets you use throughout your day. Chances are one of them is a Kohler toilet, from Kohler WI.
I put the address into my phone, started up the SLK55 AMG Merc and headed out. Fortunate to get through the construction zone prior to the barrels closing the road down to one lane. Weather was perfect for a long drive. The ride home was even nicer.
Now for what you are after, the report. The room was small and the isles narrow. There were about 20-25 dealers and the place was pretty full and stayed full. Silver was by far the most popular stuff at the show. Also, a lot of new buyers (from the questions they were asking). That is good for the hobby. A mix of ages in attendance. A lot of raw coinage being purchased. People brought lists and they are crossing off needed coins.
Currency was popular but only 3-4 dealers had it. Saw a pretty good-sized purchase of Silver certificates.
ASE’s, Rounds and bars – One dealer had NGC MS69 random dates for $45 and another was at $60. Raw ASE’s were priced at $33 random date, $36 for 2021 Type 2 and $38 for 2021 Type 1. Another dealer had raw silver rounds for around $27. His buy price was $23. Silver 10oz bars were $280 and plentiful. The 1oz bullets were $35 and 2oz at $65. A dealer offer was made for 35 Mexican silver 1oz coins at $23.50 per coin. The person did not take that price. RickO, I hope that does it for you.
90% silver – There was plenty of this available. Dealers were paying $17 face and selling at $20. There were $100 bags of dimes, quarters, halves at $2000. One guy was trying to trade a common 62 Double Eagle for a bag. Offer was the bag for the gold, but he passed. BU Kennedy halves were $22+ face. Rolls of common Morgans at $640 AU and lower.
Morgan’s and Peace – Everyone had these. Selling XF +/- for $28 Morgans/$26 Peace. One person had picked out about 5 rolls and bought them. Slabbed common 63’s at $70 and 64’s at $90. Might be time for me to liquidate my small hoard of those.
Gold – ¼ oz gold was $510 (AGE’s, Kugs, etc). Not much gold coinage around. One dealer wanted $1950 for a XF/AU 1876 DE or an AU/MS 1894 DE. The raw Pre-33 coinage was pretty high. Very little slabbed gold.
The biggest transaction I saw (not dollar amount but number of coins) was a young guy buying hundreds of boxed Ikes. He joked that in 20 years he would be selling them at shows like the old guys he was buying from. He opened box after box that contained 50-70 boxed Ikes.
I came away empty handed but expected that. I was looking for Daniel Carr Over-Strikes and high end PCGS CAC Gold. I did not see a single CAC gold coin in the place (but I could have missed it).
I hope this wasn’t too long of a report. I am not an English major so I hope I don't offend the grammar police.

One of my coin club members had a table at that show. Day before was our club's show in Gladstone, MI.
Sounds like things were much better in Sheboygan. We had 6 or 7 tables with our normal moderate traffic.
Raw GSA 82, 83, 84's priced at $450. One dealer had mostly all slabs that seemed to be priced a good bit higher than retail.
One paper dealer. One dealer had good mix raw and graded, good quality fair pricing. Rest of the tables were mostly raw, mostly cleaned overgraded overpriced. Had people coming in looking to sell coins; some BU 90%, some junk 90%, some clad spending change. One thing that stood out was a dealer offered less than melt for two rolls of BU 1955 Roosevelt dimes to a lady who came up to him. She politely declined and promptly went to another table who offered her a fair price and she sold to him.
Sounds like time well spent, even if you didn’t acquire anything.
Thanks for posting all the details!
Thanks for your good report.
It was fun getting to a small show. I went to the ANA but that is a different kind of show. This show was all about guys from the local coin club with their collections out trying to sell coins. On the other side of the table were people with their old time collections of raw coins trying to get some money from dealers.

Sounds like more of a bullion report!
Some of me misses my E55 AMG....true street sleeper! Did you air out your AMG a bit? Curious...mine had 465 HP..how much does yours have?
I have the RennTech Carbon fiber airbox but haven't done anything else to it. That brings it to 405 HP in a small 2 seater. There is a fun Top Gear episode where Jeremy is driving the car and snipers are after him (search Top Gear SLK55 AMG). My car is at the 3 minute mark after the Porsche. Only got to 85mph today though 125mph has been achieved with more to go.
The bullion was the most popular stuff there.

Mine was stock. Never got close to the 155MPH speed limiter in mine. According to the forums it would do 190 or a tad more with the speed limiter removed! Bet your is around the same or more being a lighter car and more aerodynamic if the top was up and the top could handle the speed.
Part of the RennTech package is removing the speed limiter so I guess someone could try and push it. At 125mph I felt as if I didn't need more.

It sounds like most local shows are really bullion shows rather than coin shows. Pricing of numismatic coins seems to be "optimistic".
It's also hard to talk to the dealers to get prices on slabbed coins were as most have bullion prices posted out in the open.
Nearly every dealer at this show had 3 ring binders of raw coins stacked on their table and people were searching and buying. I did not see any slabbed coin sell but saw a number of people by 3, 4, 5, ... raw coins at a time.

The appeal of raw coins seems to on the upswing. I have a feeling that a significant percentage of average collectors have become disenchanted with slabs, stickers and overpriced coins.
Also new people to the hobby and the raw coins appear cheaper because of the grades. I will say a number of them were buying cleaned coins so maybe the hobby is going back to where cleaned is not bad.

It's not just average collectors feeling this way lol!
Anyway, agree that the small shows have become more bullion-centric. About the only thing I see present, and selling, as far as expensive numismatic items these days, are Morgan dollars. Why? Because they are still available to average dealers, and popular with the public.
Gone seem to be the days of the '80's and '90's, where you could still find some cool type, higher grade early Walkers, nicer large cents, etc. at club shows. They weren't plentiful, but at least you could occasionally find them.
When I worked for the dept of housing years ago, my boss joked about how he used to date elizabeth kohler when he was younger, hung around her quite often at vail & Some other Utah ski resort. He often wondered what would have happened if he had hooked up with her permanently. I said , "you'd been a rich one" for sure.
anyway, to stay coin related, sounds like the crazy prices on generic dollars, and such are still sustaining for at least a little longer.
I might add: I dont think its so much people going back to cleaned coins, its more of a lack of knowledge in purchasing them thinking they are getting a good deal price wise, and more importantly, lack of experience in the process of getting rid of them when they have to sell them and how difficult it can be especially if you sell back to a dealer at a show.
Many average collectors are now priced out of the market for quality coins. They are buying what they can afford.
Nice report, thanks for posting it!

Thank you for the fantastic, detailed report! Great read.

@pcgscacgold .... Thank you for an excellent, detailed show report. I suspected bullion would be a focus at small local shows... I think it will also spill over to the larger shows as they return. Very interesting and well written. Thanks again, Cheers, RickO
The dealers with bullion had the most customers. At times 4-5 deep. The smaller sized show I attended prior to COVID had gold as the focal point. People were buying raw Libs and Indians. This first small post COVID show was about silver.
It will be interesting to see what the Oct 3rd 75 table show brings. That one will have a lot of high end slabs as well as bullion and raw dealers.

@pcgscacgold ... I look forward to your report on the October show.... I will be working a gun show that weekend and also the Garlic Festival....Busy time coming up.... Cheers, RickO
Thanks for your report.
Great and precise show report.
Thanks for getting my courage up to attend a local show soon.

Kennedys are my quest...
You are welcome.
I do treat shows different now. I used to ask to see many slabs or raw coins and I would look them over. Now I only ask to see ones I know I am really interested in. May not make sense, but I do not want to handle something that many others have and they have not been cleaned (or can't be).
