NEWP Crusty Capped Bust Half Dollar 1839 Reeded Edge

New pickup to fill that hole in my growing Capped Bust Half Dollar collection. Not trying to do a full set. I just get drug down that rabbit hole when I see one I like. This is one I liked. This is actually my first Reeded Edge type. It's got some nice skin hiding under that crust. It also has a green sticker. And yes, it's rotated in the holder but it's not a rattler. Will wait on the next re-holder special to get that rectified. GTG if you'd like!

    I like it!

The coin certainly appears to have good skin underneath a layer of crust and I adore the adhered crud that is on the surfaces. The die marriage appears to be GR-4 (aka JR-6) and is an R-1. This die marriage uses the same obverse die as used on the prohibitively rare 1839 Small Letters reverse and this is the fourth obverse die paired with this reverse. This reverse has characteristic striking weakness through the upper left quadrant and missing dentils near AMERICA. It looks like a good AU55 or AU58 to me.

Solid coin. BTW, you don't need to get the coin reholdered to fix the rotation. Just tap one corner of the slab smartly and repeatedly on a firm surface and the coin will rotate slowly. I generally put a towel folded in half down on a hard surface for performing said operation. Otherwise, you can chip the corner of the slab.

Mmmm hmmm ... that one looks tasty! :)

Excellent look. I'm going to say she's in a 55 jacket, but certainly has a shot to be one higher.

I'll go AU58 with a weak reverse strike.

I’m in the 55 camp too, though the obverse on it’s own probably merits a 58.

    Lovely!
    Kinda scuffy for 58?
    I'd say 53 or 61...🤔
