If any of my fellow eccentrics wants to do this, I will be happy to email you the file for that backpaper. Then all you will need is a cork board, some map pins, and some holey coins!
I'm also gonna do a 19th century type set.
Did holey large cents and Bust halves in the past. And Seated/Barber dime love tokens.
And as always, a freestyle collection of holey ancient/medieval/world coins as I accumulate them.
Just realized I did not do squares for the three varieties of 1864, but oh well. I was trying to fit it all into that 7x8 grid. I'll probably retool it later.

Nice! Though a couple of those could get real expensive. Let me know how that 1877 goes!
I have no real intention or expectation of getting the 1877. I might drill a replica later. This is a casual sideline collection that I do not wish to be a drain on resources for my primary collection. Similarly, I have no real plans to pursue the S-mint coins. A simple year set will do. I just included those dates to make the grid symmetrical. But since I later realized I’d forgotten to account for the three different kinds of 1864 cents, I’ll probably retool that grid.

Nope. That’s “cheating”. I only want 100+ year-old contemporary holes! (With one exception noted above for a fake 1877. I won’t drill any genuine coins.)

I did a year set of Seated dime love tokens back around ‘08.

Maybe if you eliminate either the small letters or large letters for the 1858 FE 1c-the difference is minor-and replace it with an 1864 copper-nickel 1c you could at least get two of the three for that year. Just a thought.
Here's a Bust half love token I haven't had the opportunity to image yet (my love tokens are yet another sideline that are awaiting further attention). So I'll quote the previous owner and use his images (thumbs and all). I swapped him an undamaged Bust half for this piece.
One of my purchases I got at a pawn shop here in Auburn, Maine a few years ago. The "reverse" is engraved with the name Hattie Maria Spolett. She was born here in Maine on Mar 25 1866. I bought this for less than 5 dollars in a lot I had. I don't think the guy who sold it knew anything about it.
It's on a cool host coin type, has an identified name on it, and also happens to have my own last name's initial. Had to have it.
When I was in Amish Country in Pennsylvania looking for coins 25 years ago I saw lots of crudely holed coins, mostly 2c and 3c CN. I think they liked to put them on a leather string to carry around. That might be a good place to look if you are ever in that area.

They're all over the place. That was common practice almost everywhere, for centuries. Every half dime I ever found metal detecting was holed. Some of the Spanish reales, too. I guess people mostly did it just so they wouldn't lose the coins.
A YN friend was inspired by this, and has a thing for half dimes. He has two holey half dimes I sent him, and has decided to start a set of those. I sent him the file for a backpaper to mount the coins on, and he's printed it out and is off to the races now!

There many reasons that people holed money....the pratice first came about by sailors esspecially those who were on war ships.
One never knew if a ship may sink or be sunk in battle. Or one may not have the time or opportunity to get to your bunk or cabin to obtain any valuable items.
It also came in handy holing a coin as you didn't as an enlisted personal to have the luxury of a cabin to store your valuables. So if you holed a coin and wore it around your neck ...if you did need to abandon ship you had your money with you. Plus wearing your money around your neck protected you somewhat from it being stolen . After all you had to sleep sometime...and your coins worn around your neck made it hard for a thief to steal them.
Women also would pin their money to under garments for safety against thief.
You may also heard about a silk purse from a pigs ear....silk purses were a necessary for the higher class to carry their gold coins. As in a silk purse the coins wouldn't rub and wear.
As in those days each gold coin was weighted as to its value. If your $5 gold piece only weighted $4.75 thats what you recieved for it.
Most lower class didnt hold any gold for that reason , they turn it in for other forms of money.
The pratice of banks weighting gold went right up to the recall by President Roosevelt to turn in your gold.

Nice use of a foot square cork tile.
Well, I HAD a spare 1847 holey, but as you can see above, I gave it to my YN friend.

Really like the concept of that set….something very different.
That said, my immediate thought was that it looked like a bingo game. I am going with the 1862-1909s column….
BINGO! You win a cull Indian cent!!!

Ooh, did you finish the Bust Halves?
Noticed awhile back that I have quite a few dates with holes, sorta semi looking for the rest.
What a unique and fun set.
Maybe when you get it completed, our host would slab it for you.
Best of luck with your search.

Yep. That’s the only one I plan to “cheat” on. I’ll drill a replica, if I get that far with this project.
