1921 morgan under grade?

PppPpp Posts: 519 ✭✭✭✭

Normally, I would not send in a 1921 Morgan to get graded by itself but I had a very large submission to pcgs. I felt since my average cost per coin for grading was low so I picked what I thought would be a ms 1921 Morgan.
According to pcgs I was wrong and this coin was graded AU58.
I was right with nine other Morgan’s I sent in with this coin being graded minimum ms62.
I am smart enough to know that I don’t know everything (by a long shot) therefore, What did I miss here?
Thank you in advance for your comments.

There looks to be rub on Liberty's cheek and her upper right cap area, so AU58 looks correct to me.

I agree with @MFeld.... AU looks fair. Cheers, RickO

There is wear on the high points of both the obverse and reverse. AU is correct.

Is that luster break we are seeing? I concur with others. AU is the right grade for this piece.

Thank you for your observations and comments.
I find when I get coins graded sometimes I win and sometimes, like this one, I lose. Overall the good news is I have a high win percentage.

But now someone can use it in their Everyman set where it is a high grade rather than being a low grade MS coin that no one really wants.

I am nowhere a grader of Morgans.
I can see the wear / rub spots mentioned above.
To me the reverse rim shows some "nicks".
Would this be a part of the coin's grade determination?

Many uncirculated coins exhibit rim nicks. That said, looking at the rims can sometimes provide a clue/piece of the puzzle as to whether a given coin is uncirculated.

You are paying for your education the hard way. Perhaps a grading course would help?

Everyone agreeing that the coin is AU. Is anyone surprised that it is graded AU58? It doesn't look that "choice".

I don't really see a rub on either cheek nor cap. But then that's my eyes. I do feel there might be slight wear on the Eagles upper breast. That would be reason enought for an AU58. Not sure but just an opinion.

I think the photo above shows the issue. Can see why they graded it AU. The cheek was first thing made me think it’s AU but the lt wear on Rev Eagles Breast likely a factor in the PCGS grade too.
