1854-O Half - 2nd of 3 New Pieces

CatbertCatbert Posts: 7,380 ✭✭✭✭✭

As I recover from my second dental implant surgery, I need a distraction and am continuing to share some new pieces acquired of late.

In an earlier thread here, I shared the 1st of 3 new pieces:

https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1062870/1893-columbian-a-color-bomb-first-of-3-new-pieces-grade-revealed#latest

Now this is the second NP and was acquired from CRO. I decided to buy this one because it fills the with arrows slot in my type set journey but also aligns with my goals of finding coins that have a distinctive look. When I saw the compelling green toning surrounding the devices, I knew it was for me (AU55 CAC). I also like the O mint mark generally and it goes well with my A&R O mint half (AU58 CAC) of the prior year.

A history bit from Wikipedia: "In the early 19th century, New Orleans, which was the fifth-largest city in the United States until the Civil War,[11] conducted more foreign trade than any other city in the nation. It was also located relatively near to gold deposits recently discovered in Alabama. While the Philadelphia Mint produced a substantial quantity of coinage, in the early 19th century it could not disperse the money swiftly to the far regions of the new nation, particularly the South and West.[12] In contrast to the other two Southern branch mints, which only minted gold coinage, the New Orleans Mint produced both gold and silver coins, and in much greater quantities and total value, which marked it as the most important branch mint in the country until the San Francisco Mint began minting a large monetary value of gold coins in the mid 1850s."

What do you think of this little green thing? Do you have a unusual SLH to share? :)

Those are both beauties! I saw your NEWP on the EB list and clicked for a closer look, but it was already on hold. Couldn't have gone to a better home... congrats!

Beautiful pieces naturally toned. Kinda reminds me of Bo Derek running down the beach. :p
