One thing I’ve learned here.

In the 7-8 years I’ve read this board is that members rarely if ever agree on anything. If 5 members say it’s green, 5 will say it’s blue and 10 will waver between yellow and orange. There isn’t a post that doesn’t have nay Sayers about everything. Even a thread on what’s the difference between AU 58 and MS 60 which spells out the grading standards is disputed. Honestly in all the boards I have been a part of I’ve never seen anything like it.

No you haven’t.
It’s an opinion-based hobby and it hasn’t always had standards (if it does now). There are a lot of “right enough” answers in coins and I love hat about this board. It’s not all great, probably everyone on here has something that fits into the way I collect or has shared an experience I can learn from or relate to (even if it REALLY is blue).
Oh, I strongly disagree.

Such are the hazards of a gold mine (which this is). Never seen anything like it The gold doesn’t jump out of the mine you have to dig for it. Same as here.

I’m happy that this is a place where free inquiry and debate prevail, at least in relation to numismatics.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
I disagree. Seriously though, I like the posters that speak their mind. It's refreshing to have a discussion that looks at all the angles. Kind of boring when everyone just agrees with everything and follows along like lemmings. I do agree with you that some here disagree with everything just to stir the pot, but even that is fun to read!
Anonymous opinion. What did you expect?
Repetition of ignorance is ignorance raised to the power two.
There is that....... but more importantly there's some seriously diverse numismatic discourse happening on many levels. I ignore the nonsense, most of it anyway. I appreciate that our host maintains this forum for us all. Peace Roy

I'm glad we have differing opinions here. We don't want it to become like this-

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
Even the the top grading companies don't always agree. They have different but similar standards, but different none the less.

Motto of this board: there is only one correct opinion, and it’s mine.
So which is it, 7 or 8? Seriously!
You don’t know do you?
When someone says they ignore the nonsense I just unread their post.
All the previous answers are wrong, of course.
You should have been around during "The Wild Wild West Days"
Posters were regularly drawed and quartered and hung out to die.
Bamming was swift and merciless,,,,,,,,,,, with the victims never to be seen or heard from ever again.
Post a coin that was mutilated and ask if it is an error. There will be agreement.
And I don't think I've ever seen a online forum where disagreement is not norm. It would also make for a pretty dull place.
Unanimity would be very boring.
Lance.
If everyone knew the "right" answer then there wouldn't be much reason for the forum.
You know you haven't learned anything!
The entire hobby is based on opinions... ergo many different inputs. We look for answers and eventually settle for opinions - some we like, some we do not. Cheers, RickO
You are absolutely, positively WRONG, even though I agree with you.

If you think it's bad here, you've never been on this website's Sports Talk forum. Debates over there often degenerate into name-calling and "you don't know what the hell you're talking about" back-and-forth. This Coin forum is wonderful by comparison.

A lot of it is because this hobby is about our perception of objects, and we perceive things differently. We're usually measuring even objective things in qualitative ways as well. Ask the board the definitions of "rare" or "scarce" and watch what happens

Damn you beat me to this!! I was just going to post the Argument Clinic! First time I heard it I was rolling on the floor!~
Actually in Ca it’s both. There is the City of Orange and Orange County.
But I agree with those that say the different opinions are what make this place great for learning. I don’t blame those on the opposing side for not realizing they are wrong.

Came for the coin forum, stayed for the sports talk
Seriously, I love this coin forum, but Sports Talk is my default hangout.
No preaching to the choir here.
I too love this forum and come here for the variety of opinions (and Mint related stuff) and get the greatest amusement out the debate over the ridiculously subjective and controversial subject of coin grading!
It reminds me of trying to explain why you live a particular song or piece of music over another. And then judging that piece of music over others.
The most fun is when someone posts pics of a coin here and the ensuing wild grading discrepancies and opinions, by “experts”!!
If everybody agreed on everything what would be the point of a discussion then?

"Keep in mind that most of what passes as numismatic information is no more than tested opinion at best, and marketing blather at worst. However, I try to choose my words carefully, since I know that you guys are always watching." - Joe O'Connor
If you want to see something like it go to a firearms forum and read discussions on stopping power. Or a martial arts forum and discussions on which style is the best for self-defense.
I thing some of the issues related to collecting that cause the lively discussions center around the charging grading “standards” and how the are interpreted. Then there are the very different opinions on the appeal of various designs, attractiveness of toning, moderns versus classics, etc. There is a lot of room for differences of opinion and the banter can be entertaining as well as educational. You get to know the various “personalities” on the forum and get expert opinions from others that are legitimate numismatist that freely share their advise and opinions.
