Cricket - PCGS 65FH (Detached)

The famous PCGS slabbed cricket is up for sale. As old holders go, this one is legendary. Bidding is already more than I'd want to pay for it, but it has a far higher coolness factor than a generic in a doily with a gold sticker on it. No clue what it'll sell for, but I imagine Important Laughs™ are quite prized in this hobby.

Wait, is it April 1st?
Edit: I looked at the link - incredible.
Wow!
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
How did this come about? Must have been done purposefully, as their is not a grade as would be if an accident occurred.

Hmmmm. I like
I bet the price goes way higher.
Already over a grand.
Only 53 days left.
It say that the cricket was bothering the PCGS graders and they decided to slab it. Ex Fred Weinberg collection.
Shouldn't this be in the bug collecting forum? LOL

It was a US bug, so I put it here.

Now that is unique.... and legitimately created (read the detail on the link). I would not pay that price though....Cheers, RickO
JIMINY !!!
This is how you know we've reached a numismatic market top
My PCGS Set Registry Profile
Around 1999/2000, in the PCGS Grading Room,
the graders were bothered by a cricket who wouldn't
stop chirping - they found it, caught it, slabbed it,
and thought of me ('he likes strange coins and things').
I've owned it for over 20 years.

Can we see the obverse?
I think it would be worth more if the cricket was in better condition.

I have no idea if it has one or not, but ......
..... it would be really cool if that slab had an accompanying letter from Fred on his letterhead telling the story.
I don’t believe a headless cricket should get a full head designation. All we ask for is consistancy in the grading room.
Environmental Damage - pass.

A good candidate to submit to WINGS?
Was he alive at the time of slabbing? I bet he was.
Where is PITA when you need them,,,,,,, NOT.
@Cricket was a heckuva guy. Sad to see him meet this end.

This entire thread really bugs me!
See what I did there?
Anyone?
(crickets)
He looks happy.
That is a really neat item. Nice story to go with it also.
He might be a little too new to be able to get a CAC sticker.

Why not? looks pretty original to me.
Anyone who doesn’t see the humor in this is taking the hobby a little too seriously.
….. appears to have delaminated a bit since slabbing though.
Not original color. Toning is not stable. Needs reholdered with a TrueView. Pass!

Looks like a counterfeit cricket
Too bad it's not in an OGH, then it would go for real money...

Slabbed alive? What a horrible way to die! I hope Fred has the decency to donate the proceeds to PETA or some worthy cricket conservation society.

Crickets are related to locusts. I hope It goes into the Tyrant collection for the “Plagues” display.
Otherwise, it’s going to look really nice on someone’s hearth.
I agree Andy. Fred needs to donate the proceeds!👍
Why not donate the proceeds to an ANA YN scholarship.
Oh, man! This should be reported to the animal activists. NOT cool.
It's an insect, not a mammal, and it's
almost as famous as Jimminy Cricket !

Maybe..............but this whole thing bugs me..................
Pete
If you've ever tried to catch a cricket, it's very doubtful it was slabbed alive!
If in Fred's case at $500, I'd buy it - as a novelty for over $1k, Forget About It!
I catch them in my house all the time. And release them outside, of course. But at these prices, maybe next time I'll just ship them to Newport Beach, PETA be damned!

Mr. Eureka - for your age, you are very quick/agile!
Andy- once the cricket sells for thousands of dollars, slabbed by PCGS, and it goes viral and is picked up by news organizations...
And anyone who knows me knows what I am talking about, and knows that I know what I am talking about...
Everyone with a cricket will be calling PCGS for instructions on how to submit their cricket, and/or their local PCGS authorized dealers for details😉
I can already see the PCGS ad campaign:
"If it's not PCGS, it's not cricket."
And NGC won't be able to do a thing!

BTW, this is not the only PCGS slabbed insect out there. When I was at PCGS in 87-88, one of the graders had some insect slabbed. (I'm thinking it was a rattler cockroach, but I could be wrong.) So Fred's cricket, important as it is, is not completely unique.
