I'm going to be getting my first Dan Carr piece. Where I had been out of the hobby for the last 25 to 30 years I had never even heard his name before. It seems I missed out on a lot. Anyways I found a 1917 Peace dollar broken sword and I am in the process of getting it. It will take a short while because I pay by personal check, but I can't wait to have it in hand to admire his work close up.

Great decision on purchasing a Carr.
It is a worthy piece in any collection.
    Enjoy it.

Not that it matters much to collectors, yet I doubt a single example of a Moonlight Mint overstruck coin has not seen tremendous upside in profit when purchased from Carr's website.

    @SummerDays3104 Nice :)
@braddick it seems people are collecting these, so it must matter to some collectors

What I meant was the motivating factor among collectors is the joy in collecting these, not necessarily the profits.

I have several Dan Carr pieces and love 'em all! Intaglio Mint does a great job, too.

@Knell does yours have a special finish? It looks different than mine.

I like the artist's original concept regarding the broken sword, but I can also see why some found it to portray the wrong image.

Here's one of the two-ounce coins I picked up "back in the day."

And, for completeness, the other one:

After looking at these old photos I took and those of @TomB above, it's obvious he nailed the technique.

I know but it's the best I could do. I couldn't afford one of those even if I sold my entire collection. I'd love to have one, tho.

@Coinnmore These were made by Dan Carr, struck over a real Peace dollar. He has made many different years. Many different designs as well.

As far as I know, no special finish. I ordered this because I like the look of antique finish and over struck on one of those Peace $1 1922-1935.

Those are beautiful coins, looking around on eBay, I see lots of ANACS "Token" slabs. Will PCGS grade them the same? I'd like a 1964-D Peace Dollar, $250 seems to be the going rate.

  • gumby1234gumby1234 Posts: 5,591 ✭✭✭✭✭

@bramn8r i could be wrong ( nothing unusual) but I dont think PCGS slabs Dan Carr. I know ANACS and IGC do. They both do a good job grading. It is in some peoples heads that the other 3 grading companies don't grade correctly. I've had many ANACS coins that upgraded when crossed to our host.

@gumby1234 two of my highest graded crossovers were ANACS, I'd like to see PCGS grade a Dan Carr. I may just buy a 1964-D Peace "token" - it's beautiful.
