For the Fun of It: "Grading" off of an average photo!

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,245 ✭✭✭✭✭

Part of the joy I find in the hunt for cool coins off of eBay is trying to interpret photos from sellers. Especially those who are not trying to dup the buyer- they simply shoot average pictures of the items they're selling.
Here is a Buffalo nickel I recently purchased (it isn't here yet). I am curious what it will look like in person. Luster? Strike? Is it Uncirculated? These are all questions I have whereas the photos don't lend to offering any answers.

Not sure you going to be super happy with that one Pat. Luster is going to show signs of cleaning. Net 50.

I understand your point . . . .and would CERTAINLY buy these sorts of pieces when the price (risk) was decent . . .

$22.00, so I feel alright. If it isn't anything at all it'll just go in a DANSCO 7070 type set.

Looks low Au to me from the pics.

I would call it AU50... I would not take those chances unless it were an exceptional coin. And I do not ebay anymore. Cheers, RickO

It would be more fun to guess the year the coin was placed in the Capitol holder... my guess is 1972

    I would guess 63.

64 or better ... but it would fit perfect in a type set album. ( though I'd prefer a 3 legged '36 -D in such condition for said album

I am not seeing rub with that photo. I do see luster present. I think there is definite potential for a nice MS coin. AU at a minimum. I would like to see your photos taken without the holder.

For $22 I don't see much down side in the transaction... looks like a nice AU and could be better.

FWIW... it looks like the image was shot at higher resolution so blowing up the image doesn't pixelate it as much. There was a recent thread about an '89CC Morgan Dollar that I just couldn't enlarge enough to really see before the image was so pixelated that it was useless.

AU-58 at a minimum. I don't think it is a cleaned "problem" coin.
Possibly mint-state, but that depends on factors not revealed by the photo.

    Looks nice enough

  • clarkbar04clarkbar04 Posts: 4,973 ✭✭✭✭✭

Lioks ms but from those pics maybe a bit lackluster, but luster is hard to judge when there’s almost no light to reflect and further diffused through the holder.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

I think/hope once you get it out of the dingy yellow plastic you will be pleased.

    Like I was…
