Why would someone ask questions here when they can find the answers elsewhere?

moursundmoursund Posts: 3,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

I see some topics that look more like trying to start an interesting conversation than simply trying to get an answer. Like this one. :)

Ob coins: why are coin albums so expensive? Relatively small market?

I would learn something IF you explained "tangential discussion."

I could guess pretty close I suspect but have never heard that term used before.

Topic goes on a tangent... Related. to original topic, but heads in a new direction.

Yes. It’s a discussion forum. Throw it out there and discuss.

The flow of the comments may drift away from the original topic though, and the forum police will get you.

... And on a circular coin a tangent is perpendicular to the radius... The tangents have to at least touch on the coins... Much like the posts in this category ought

ok, but there was a real question in the original post. Do coin albums seem 'expensive'? I'm surprised it costs $25 for something made of cardboard.

Well, it’s not like this discussion hasn’t come up before… lol

I have seen it in every forum. It just is what it is. I think some of it is ignorance of those other places to look for answers, the feeling that they will get a better answer than they will, the forum software search is not user friendly or helpful (the one on this board isn’t very friendly), etc.

People are people. Why does my coworker ask me a question for something they could easily look up in the corporate wiki? Convenience and they think they’ll get the answer faster than me. At least until I ignore them for an hour since it isn’t important…

This forum is just one of a plethora of resources at our fingertips. One would be foolish not to make good use of it in both the interrogative and the sharing of wisdom.

Coin albums, at least used ones, can be found for a good price if you look hard enough.

If I have a simple factual question whose answer can be found elsewhere, I don't bother people here, I go look for it. But if I have a question that involves tapping into collectors' experiences, this is the place to ask.

    No.

Nothing is stopping anyone from manufacturing, marketing and selling albums for less. Except maybe the possibility there's not enough profit to be made to make doing so worthwhile.

It has to be archival cardboard. And the $25 ones are also die cut with windows. Whitman blue books are $5 and "made of cardboard".

    I have done this too.

You post something. Then, for whatever reason, you want to retract it.
Unfortunately, you cannot delete the entire post, just edit it.
So, you replace the original text with a single character (e.g., a period).

Yeah... I expect that they could be made in great volume at much lower cost, but there just isn't that big a market.

Somebody mentioned to me that good used albums can often be found at LCS. Good idea.

I apologized to a customer , the other day. He has been to the shop a few times. He has never bought or sold. He is nice enough. I lost my patience and just flat out asked : " do you just come here to talk because you're lonely ? We finally did a deal. That's my answer for this thread. Loneliness.
