Hi all
I have a few questions about a steel penny coin that I have and trying to sell
do you guys think it was cleaned or its un-circulated? is there a way to tell?
What is the recommended asking price for selling it?
Appreciate your help, Thank you!
- the copper penny in the pictures is just for comparison.

Circulated coin that has been reprocessed with a new outer coating. Novelty value only.

People are sneaky , damn!!!!
Can you tell me how can you tell? for future reference?
The face looks un circulated!
Thank you!
Agree on a reprocessed/replated cent - going to be almost impossible to sell on eBay for even a few cents profit.

Too shinny.

An uncirculated coin will have more detail and surfaces will not have this almost chrome-like sheen. What they usually do is give the coin a mild acid wash then either re-zinc or nickel plate.

This is an uncirculated piece with natural luster.

Plated
Too shiny and the extra plating softens and removes sharpness of the details
I agree with the above assessments.... No numismatic premium, good for spending. Cheers, RickO
Thank you very much all!
I love learning from you guys!!!
Here is one of mine:

Kennedys are my quest...
"The original blanks were punched from zinc plated steel core, the edges of an original would show steel edges rather than zinc. Reprocessing plates all surfaces, including the edges."

So if the edges are as shiny as the faces then you have a reprocessed cent.

@shark669 you may want to get that scale calibrated. A copper plated zinc cent should weigh 2.5 and a 1943 zinc plated steel should be 2.7 and a pre 82 copper cent should be 3.1

Those are grams and that scale is in ounces
HOWEVER
doing the math, those weight measurements are way, way high.
I agree. You need to recalibrate that scale.
@MsMorrisine yes the math doesn't add up either way.

Either way - as it stands your gram/oz scale is worthless to this conversation. How bout "SHINY" - Game changer - how's that edge looking???

I Echo that sentiment!
I didn't know that replating steel pennies was a thing. Amazing!
@moursund you would be amazed at what some people do to coins to try and make a buck.

I'm amazed at how many people seem to think it's okay to steal from other people...
Or that deceiving and cheating them somehow isn't stealing
re-plated with zinc steel cents are often called "re-processed"
I bought a roll of steel cents for $20 because the end coins had cool toning. When I opened it up I thought I hit the jackpot. But when I started looking through them closely I noticed something was off. That was the day I learned about plated steel cents.
I still have them, here is a bad picture of one of the better ones.
