A 1971 penny is made of copper so the normal weight of one will be 3.11 grams. Copper plated pennies made 1983 to present are to weigh 2.5 grams.

Just a note.
The 1982 cent coins have both weights as this was the transitional date when the mint switched from copper to zinc.
Add to the game, this coin has both small and large dates.
A 1982 D small date with a weight of 3.11 grams (Copper) is a highly sort after coin as it should weigh 2.5 grams.
How to identify a large date from a small date.
The “2” of date might be the most obvious; study how close it is to the rim on the Large Date vs. how far it is from the rim on the Small Date. It’s that simple.

Kennedys are my quest...
memorial cents can weigh 3,11 grams or they can weigh 2.5 grams
it depends upon the year
