This nice large cent has some damage to the front of the Coronet. What could cause this? Corrosion?

Maybe a little grease/debris filling the die or damage. Pics are too dark Gor me to say for sure.

You should crimp the backs of your staples. That's an easy way to scratch your coins if they are stacked or in a box.

Yeah I should put that one in a new 2×2 anyway. So you are suggesting that maybe this is not a damaged coin, but damaged die?

If you are set on a new 2x2 then shoot it outside of it and with more light

No doubt... Especially if I now think this might be not a damaged coin!

Yep, a better picture will help but even with the supplied pic it looks like a flat spot on her brow below the missing LIB and to the right of it in the hair. Plus the star directly above looks a bit misshapen so it might be damaged indeed. Hopefully better pics will show I'm wrong

Based on the flatness in the hair (next to the missing LIB) and brow, to me, it appears to be damage. Cheers, RickO

Here are 2 better pics of the damage... The second shot with flash from directly above. Again, is this likely damaged/dirty die, or damaged coin? And what could cause this sort of damage?

    Thanks, always educational.

@moursund you can buy a stapler that the staples get flattened when you use it. only like $10. Or use a small pair if pliers to squish them down afterwards that way you wont damage other coins.

Yes, I have a flat clinch stapler. That coin was in an old two by two. Now it is in a new one with flat Staples. But... What could have caused the damage?

    Thanks

That looks like foreign matter. Glue?

One More close up from the top. may be foreign matter, but the lib have been somehow removed. It looks a bit corroded?
