ANA Show Report

goldengolden Posts: 9,859 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was my 51st consecutive ANA show. I have looked forward to this show more than any other since I attended my first ANA show ,in St. Louis , in 1970.

I left home at daybreak on Monday . After a quick stop at the drive through at Hardee's, I was on my way. After a stop for gas , lunch , a few rest breaks and 8 areas of road construction , I arrived in the Chicago area just in time for rush hour. I arrived at my hotel in late afternoon. After I checked in at the hotel I went to the Rose Garden Cafe for dinner. I had the char-grilled pork chops ( 3 large thick ones ) , baked potato , creamed chicken and rice soup and assorted bread basket for $13.85. That has to be the best deal on the planet!

Tuesday morning I had one of the pork chops left over from Monday night for breakfast. I arrived at the parking garage ( $15 ) at 11 AM. Since the show did not open until 12:30 , for ANA members , I decided to make good use of my time. I looked at a few auction lots at Heritage and Stack's Bowers.

When the show opened I went straight to the PCGS booth. I had to wait in line for 30 minutes. I submitted a few British Gold coins and a Standing Liberty Quarter that was holdered with a mechanical error.

Next I went to see David Kahn. We bought and sold a few coins. Next I went to see Liz Coggan. I had already agreed to purchase a Barber Dime from her last Friday. After that I started making the rounds of the bourse floor.

This year there were fewer tables than usual but the aisles were greatly enlarged. The actual foot print of the show was just as big as usual.

I contemplated a Large Cent at Charmy Harker's table , but I did not purchase it then. At another table I looked at an 1858-S Gold Dollar in PCGS AU 53. It looked ok except for a small mark in front of the face. I passed. At another table there was an 1845 $2 1/2 in PCGS XF 45. I thought about it but did not purchase it. When I went back later it was gone.

There was an 1880 Gold Proof set all in PCGS 64 Cam or higher and all with CAC stickers, a 1912 Gold Proof set in NGC all grading 66 except for one 67, and a super rare 1839/8 $10 Type of 1838 in PCGS PF 62! I saw 3 1792 Half Dismes. There was a PCGS 25 and 45 and a NGC 63. There were a lot of incredible and super rare coins on the bourse floor. By the end of the day I had only been to about 75% of the floor.

Tuesday night I went back to the Rose Garden Cafe for dinner. I had the fried ocean Perch, French Fries, cream of chicken and rice soup ( it is super good ) and assorted bread basket for $11.75.
Wednesday morning I had the last of the pork chops ,left over from Monday night ,for breakfast. I arrived just before the show opened. I said hello to Dave Wnuck, Kenneth Goldman, Julian Leidman, Harry Jones and Lyn Knight.

One dealer had dozens of slabbed 1921 Peace Dollars. I saw the D.L. Hansen Trade Dollar set including the 1884 and 1885! Saw Proof sets from 1857, 1861,1891 and 1895 in one case. There were 2 each of 1880 Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair Stellas!

I saw a 754.95 ounce gold bar from the S.S. Central America. I was going to buy it but I thought it would break my arm carrying it around in my briefcase. :)
For Ricko . I saw one ounce Silver bars at $29 and 10 ounce bars for $275. Recent date Silver Eagles were priced at $40 but I don't think they were selling.
In the afternoon I looked at the exhibits and cast my vote for the Peoples Choice Award. I went back to Charmy's table and purchased the Large Cent that I had looked at on Tuesday.

Late in the afternoon I took time to look at the Tyrant Exhibit. Holy Crap!

Thursday I arrived at the 9:30 opening. I went to drop off 10 coins for John ( Messy Desk ) to image for me. I next attended the PCGS Awards. They had a nice little spread for us.

After that I went up to the second floor for the Great American Stamp Show. My cousin was going to fly in from Seattle for this show but decided it would not be in her best interest to rick it with the Delta variant increasing. The stamp hobby seemed to be alive and well. Almost all dealers were busy. At the USPS area there were over 100 people in line to buy something. The exhibits took up half of the floor space. I found several of them to be very interesting and I voted my choice for the best exhibit. I saw a 1918 inverted Jenny.

I picked up my coins from John and then went to hear a talk on Kentucky Nationals Bank Notes. Then I was off to the ANA awards. They put out a nice spread for us. When that was over I decided to call it a day and headed back to the hotel.

Friday morning I checked out of the hotel and started on the long drive home. The drive was uneventful until I was an hour from home. There was a huge traffic jam that delayed me an hour. I arrived home a little before dark.

I had a super time at the ANA! I am already thinking about next years ANA. I just wish that it was someplace else instead of Chicago.

:)

Thanks for the amazing report. Is the show in Chicago again next year. I tried searching the ANA site and could not find that info. If it is, I will be there 2 or 3 days instead of 1. Time to start saving some spending money.

Thanks for the Nice Report Golden
The 754.95 oz. ingot must have been poured by the assaying firm of Justh & Hunter

Years ago I recall seeing the 933.94 oz. Kellogg & Humbert “Eureka” gold brick at Long Beach.

Back then I could have held it in my arms, today I would probably drop it on my foot.

Nice report. It sounds like you ate well and saw cool toys. Winter FUN is less than 5 months away! :)

I'm gonna have to find that place for food next time. The options in the immediate vicinity of the center weren't bad but they weren't that cheap either!

Thanks for the report, congrats on #51!

Those pork chops just kept on giving.

51 show in a row!? That is quite impressive …. You gotta be at least 72?

Any pics of the large cent you’d like to share?

Thanks for the report …. I’m envious and can’t wait for another big show … my last big one was Long Beach in Sept. 2019….. 😆

The Crowne Plaza hosted an Anime convention that began on Friday. Made for an interesting evening. A few views of our hotel lobby.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Great report. I've never been to a local coin show much less a national show. I'm jealous.

I've never been to Chicago unless the airport counts? The last time I stopped was on the way back to NYC from Hawaii at 4:30 AM.

I was hungry/thirsty so I stopped at a Starbucks. I don't drink coffee so I ordered a hot chocolate. It tasted like a melted chocolate bar so I was happy.

Those that went to the Chicago coin show will remember who they met and the good time they had and perhaps the good food they ate? I will only remember hot chocolate which I could have bought from a Starbucks down the block.

If you have never been to any coin show, you are missing out. Make plans to attend some show soon.
