I found another Kettle 1803 Eagle Turban Head in the wild.....

I think this is my 4th or 5th one in the raw now. The silver Quarter eagle I found did grade as a MS61.......Happy Days!

@coinsarefun.... Wow Stef... Very nice coin... Looks like the 0 may have been repunched, or the punch slipped. Great detail on a nice gold coin. Thanks for the really nice pictures. Cheers, RickO
Higher grade example. Very nice pickup!
RE: ...nice gold coin.
gold??? What are you looking at?
Nice!!
I love these.
So far I have resisted, although I have thought about it.
Nice score and nice pics
Thanks everyone.....I switched the background to white. I completely forgot what I was putting inside the template
and this token needed to have a white background

Nice pics. What is the purpose of the Kettle text?

I like it.

Thanks, these are KETTLE tokens. They are supposed imitate the real gold coins but used as gaming tokens. Made in England during the gold rush years and used up and down the west coast.

Used to keep score in certain card games back when paper was a luxury item.
Spectacular token. The design, the history, the patination. Very cool
Thanks for sharing the article! That's really cool

was that one gold plated?

I do not believe so. I think it’s brass. This one is also raw, found it 6-8 months ago and it’s definitely
Gilt brass. It’s also missing the KETTLE signature and looks original to me.

i one of these, but not as nice as yours. congrats on this find.

Yes, I have one. It’s strange he doesn’t have his signature on these. But there is a story on how and
why he made these. Btw, there are several varieties (of course) but I’m happy with one affordable
example.

Did you post it here? I haven’t see it. There’s no such thing as a bad token unless it’s seen
the railroad tracks……lol

haha, no i hasn't been on the tracks luckily. i like mine...it has character...but weak strike, lots of wear. you can't see "kettle" very well, which is kinda like having a weak mintmark on a branch mint coin, if that makes sense.
I like it very much. Like you said, it has character. This one is becoming my favorite.
It’s been worn down fairly evenly. Makes me think it could have circulating as the real deal!.

Steph,
Is my coin above a possible fake or restrike as it looks different from the one on coinfacts, but more akin to yours.
Thanks,

I need to go to my regular desktop and look. It’s had to see on this iPad.
Is it a half or quarter eagle?

That's right a quarter eagle has different numerals than a half eagle, which is what mine is. It's brass also. My bad.

Steph,
One more question and I'll leave you alone. What book did the Kettle Counter page come out of?

That is from the Token and Medal Society Journal, 1981 IIRC.
I think the page reference come from online TAMS
But this thread talk a lot about them too

There are a few really good book by L,B. Fauver. Ne's the guy that collected as many as he could and wrote constantly
regarding his findings. not cheap and he get philosophical but its really good.
if you put a Ebay watchlist out for L B Fauver you can get his supplementals for erasable prices,

Now, all of this material is pretty much all the gaming counters and material the Kettle from Birmingham England put out various periods of the gold rush eras.

.
These pages are probably the most pertinent to the half and quarter eagle turban head pieces. They are out of his book.

The posted pics were the seller's pics, not mine. I look forward to receiving it, photographing it and perhaps a soak in acetone and rephotographing it before placing it in a holder. Never had noticed these until your posts. I had seen other posts in their regards in the past 2005, 2009 and since but never really grabbed my attention as yours have. I have a strong penchant for dirty brass and like dirty gold but have never owned any.
Thanks again.

A very cool token, Stef. Your collection is way cool. Every time I open one of your threads I’m always impressed.👍
Don’t soak in acetone yet. Post pics first. I’ve had very bad luck with acetone but mineral oil works
super good. It might take months but worth it.

I wonder what that author thought he was accomplishing when he listed non-existent pieces, such as a half eagle token without obverse stars or a copy of the 1805 Eagle "for convenience?"
Benj had his own way of looking at things and drew connections between items and ideas that made some of us go "Hmmmm" for several reasons. He did do a ton of study and piles of his gathered research tokens are still showing up in auctions. I believe that his copyrights are still in force -- for more of his writing see the anonymously written "Horatio Speaks" columns in the earlier Civil War Token Society publications. Benj was an interesting fellow.
.
.
I’ve heard these things from almost every collector and dealer of these tokens. I don’t think anyone
decayed more time and research than he did. Token research as far as mintages and varieties are much more difficult than looking up records from the mint. Even tho at times the mint was vague.
.
I really would have liked to meet him…….I would have so many questions and compliments.

Here are my inhand pics. It's odd but there is no sign of the green on the coin I received. Don't understand how the seller's pic had signs of green pvc. Not that I'm mad about it.

Actually it looks really nice! It might be that the sellers color was so far off it made what small amount of
gold gilt remaining look like pvc. That's all the better for you. Congratulations! It has nice honest wear. Now you have a coin to post for dirty gold threads
