I need to see what Palladium will be used for when the catalytic converters go away. From what I read that is the number one use and it is not part of the EV movement.
One good thing for those buying is I usually pick the wrong way to go. I should have bought these in years 1-4.
Perhaps yes for when they mint another Proof Pd issue with only 1,500 mintage.
Actually, they should have used the palladium for the 1945 mintage of the privy coin last year! They wouldn’t have messed with the (35) year old gold eagle series that had a proof low mintage of roughly 10,000 before that. And, they could have ended their palladium experiment with a bang!
Just my 2 cents. Wondercoin.
Please visit my website at www.wondercoins.com and my ebay auctions under my user name www.wondercoin.com.
Of course many of the ones being bought are flippers looking for even more. And they might find a few buyers who don't know the Mint actually sells these for less. LOL
If they put out the next first spouse with a 1,500 mintage limit, maybe that will attract some new interest. The 2020 Bush uncirculated has sold only 1,737 and the proof 2,735.
2000 Mintage tops. Like the Gold Spouse. But MUCH better looking.
That would have made today fun.
The demand on these does not meet the minted numbers, not even close.
And Kudbegud, that was a bold and ballsy move!
Interesting how that works. Raised the price $250 over the prior PM grid premium table, so they "wouldn't lose money on it", and resulting sales dropped so much, now they might lose even more

It is impossible to prove with the way the United States Mint reports numbers, however, my analysis indicates the Mint would rather sell 3,817 @ $3,350.00 than sell 12,000 @ $3,050.00 from a profitability perspective...
I would have loved to get one but with Palladium at $2350 today I could not see paying the $1000 premium. Maybe I will get lucky down the road. It is a beautiful coin.

if the Pd spot price is down to $1000, so a Pd eagle is priced at $2000 or

Interesting questions. If spot moves to $1000 I will be a buyer at about $1400 or so. That would be about the same premium as today but easier to swallow. Could buy 3 of them.
The only play on this coin is that even with a 12,000 Maximum mintage, the USM will not strike all of these at once. They may have struck 4,000 coins to start and if they would close ordering windows and not let them linger forever—you might catch a “good one” with a sub 5,000 mintage even though the intent was 12k.

This, as a series, is a race to the bottom mintage wise.
What is low one year will see lower in the future.
Will it base at some level?
Will the mint cry mercy to Congress at some point?
With Palladium at $2220 this morning, when will the Mint lower the price? A 50%+ premium is rather steep for the coin. They seem to raise the price quickly.
The relatively low cost of platinum makes me think it will be a better buy at this time. Industrially there is a lot of overlap in these two metals. Platinum low vs palladium high makes platinum look good.
The primary use of palladium is for catalytic converters. With electric cars, there will no need for palladium. The price will drop. About 2025-2030 there will be the beginning of the drop. Hang on when it starts….
I read recently that palladium and platinum will both still be needed in similar amounts as more hybrid electric vehicles are built This is because of the smaller engine starting and stopping and not getting as hot for efficiency and due to higher environmental standards for emissions.
Only the full electrics don't require these PM's for cats. This will help make the decline in demand somewhat gradual, but it is already starting and the chip shortage has cut down on recent new auto demand.
Palladium at $1960 this morning. I will be watching the Wednesday price update from the mint tomorrow. We should be moving down into the $2900's or lower very soon.
Or Deeper Denial.
That is a ridiculously higher mark up for a coin that already has a ridiculously high Mint mark up.
On the plus side, there was also a proof Palladium in 2018.

I'm not sure what time the changes are made, but if I'm not mistaken the price should drop to $2900.
According to my math the last weeks average should be $1976 putting the average per oz. in the
$1950.00 to $1999.99 row making this weeks price $2900.
So many things going against this years issue, but first and foremost I think the mint destroyed some collectors incentive by producing a proof finish that was already done in 2018. Each year has been different finishes (proof, reverse proof, burnished, etc) except this year…
Comments
“Or, perhaps they only sell 5,000 to 6,000 before taking them off sale in the future and they retain some numismatic value.”
Until a Mint Director has the brilliant idea to produce 4,500 of the next edition thereby wiping out the value of the 5,500 mintage one! Yes?

I'm not going to be definite on the Pd issues.

I am wondering if this will be the canary for how many are really into the series.

Hard to say, the premium imposed just yesterday, I"m sure, turned off quite a few of us, including me.
And I was an avid PD Eagles since day 1.
Now I'm just probably buy 1 off the secondary market....maybe.

I was thinking that if they made 7000 they are going to be for sale for a long time. If they made 5000 they may not be making any more.

this one has a max mintage of 12,000 for some odd reason

Another observation
1000 over 10000 means 10% to even, the other 50%
Luckily Pd is (currently) volatile. 50% is possible but I like the odds on 10% better
Today's palladium price action (down over $130) is a good reason why these eagle sales are going to be dead with that asking mint price and premium.
